This is a little guide as to making our assistance in this folder easy for you and us.
1. Don't be vague. "I want a machine I can play games with" is vague. Rather, "I need to build a gaming rig for playing Half Life 2 in all it's glory" is much better. The more details you provide, the better and more accurate our listings will be for you.
2. List anything you'll recycle into this project. Monitors, keyboards, mice, peripherials, software and operating systems are included, if you recycle. Remember, if you plan on donating/giving/selling a current system, you must adhere to any EULA for software going to that machine.
3. Give us a budget, preferrably a target. $850 to $1000 rather than $925 give the participating members a little leeway to utilize their skills and favorite items.
4. Please don't start any AMD/Intel or nVidia/ATI Fanboy wars here. 'nuff said. All of the above products work well for some, not well for others.
5. If you have a preferred method of shopping, please include that. Some people favor newegg, some zipzoomfly, et. al.
6. (Thanks, DreadedOne509) Adding links can add a great deal of useful information to your post. However, adding several links that are not descriptive can turn some people away from even looking at them due to either time constraints, or those that have low bandwidth connections.
This is an example of how not to do a link in your post:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6800999137
This tells the reader nothing about what you are linking to except that it is something from NewEgg.com. Here is that same link done just right:
NewEgg Glossy Logo Sticker $5.00
Here is how it is done:
Code:
[url=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16800999137]NewEgg Glossy Logo Sticker $5.00[/url]
The url=web address is enclosed in brackets, then description, then closing brackets /url.
It is super-easy to do, takes about 1/10th of a second longer than just adding a link the other way, and conveys so much more usable information.
*** NEW *** 7. (Thanks, Longhorn19) If a video card/video cards are in the purchase - and you are planning to keep your current monitor(s), please list that Make/Model monitor(s), and it's known resolution(s). This way, we can help you get the best bang for buck without draining your 401(k).
Thank you all for your participation.
