good $800 computer or not

i have a friend who is in need of a half life 2 computer for around $750 this was what i thought he should get, think i picked somthing bad.

CPU: Athlon64 3000 winchester (939) -$155
MOBO: CHAINTECH NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra -$109
RAM: 512mb (2x256) Patriot DDR550 PC4400 - $106
VGA: MSI GeForce 6600 GT 128mb (with 15 CDs worth of stuff)- 187
HDDs: (2 in raid 0) Hitachi 80GB sata-II 8mb 7,200rpm- $61 x2
DVD-/+RW: NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW ND-3520A- $61
Case/PSU: POWMAX 702 MATRIX & 450W PSU - $37

is the PSU ok? sounds fishy $40 for 450 Watt and case i would get a better psu

and can we pump up the GPU any more.

Did you rember all the little crap, like paste heatsinks...

Complete waste of funds on the extra hard drive (RAID-0) for a gaming rig. RAM is a waste of funds if not overclocking as well. You can get a 2x256mb kit of decently timed (2-3-3-6) G.skill for $77 shipped - HERE.

Apply the savings from the above two tweaks towards a real power supply, and you've got a decent budget rig on your hands.

You definitely want a better PSU buddy. I wouldn't trust a stock PSU in a case that cost me 75 dollars, let alone 37. Try again on that one, otherwise the rest looks good. You might consider just getting a raw HDD drive with more space though instead of trying to go with a Raid-0 array.

As everyone has mentioned, a better PSU is the first thing that should be looked at. Once you have that, and have worked your cash around which CPU, MB and RAM you want, use the leftover funds for the rest.
You mentioned that you want a HL2 rig. Due to this, GPU is high on the list also. Forget the 2 drives, wont increase the load times is RAID (From what I was told)

i voted ok because for one thing, i recommend investing in a better psu like anetc or enermax power supplies. also, like the last post said, if your friend isnt overclocking then there is no need to get that high quality ram. that ram is meant for overclocking.

his ram was 106 $ that he plans on buying this is cheaper price and better.

I can't seem to find a decent $30 PSU if anyone knows of one or can find one post a link

what makes that ram better? i thought since athlon64s really benifited from good ram dual channel would have helped a lot.

Take the rest of your system's price. $155 CPU, $110 Mobo, $185 Videocard, $122 HDDs, $106 RAM... but you're only considering a $30 PSU?

If you ain't OCin', the supAr fast RAM ain't helpin'. Dual-Channel helps, but low latencies don't help much at all.

If you go with Value RAM, then you can spend the "saved" money and spend it towards a beefy PSU.
