Not bad, but I don't know about the Motherboard... Plus it is out of stock (so are the speakers). With $1500 and no games, would he at all be interested in a portable computer (a laptop). I don't personally like them, but if he needs to move around, then a laptop is the way to go. Other than that... I still don't like the motherboard. There is an Asus one for a bit more. If you had to stay under $1500, I would drop the floppy and get the Asus. I guess the high price is because it is canadian dollars...

system is not bad for what your friend is gonna do. 512megs of ram is more than enough already if he uses his computer for chatting and surfing the web.

i dont know about the motherboard either or the chipset sis760. I recommending getting an nforceIII or something besides and sis chipset.

IMO, that monitor is overpriced. I would go over to a site like price grabber, or newegg and try to get one cheaper. I'm shopping for one too this week, I have a post in free clinic. I'm seeing a lot of 17 inch from $200 to $250ish- most have rebates. I found that one on Zip zoomfly- it's an analog monitor.

I would also rethink the mobo, see if you can find one with an NForce chip.

I'm not sure if Monarch ships to Canada, but it's worth a look.

i would go with a different mobo, maybe not a different brand as ive seen some good things about foxconn, but definitely a better chipset.

 doesn't sound like anyone here likes anything about that system. but i definitely agree with needing a different hard drive and the monitor is definitely overpriced; especially for 17in. your friend is better off going w/beardo's recommendations.

Just another linux zealot in his holier than thou phase, in a few months he'll wise up, stop spazing out every chance he gets to tell you how great linux is, and will just shut up.

If he chose the parts for his friend then I doubt his friend really wants to learn to use Linux and all new programs (even though its as easy as fixing my car).

It sounds like his friend already uses Word/MSN messenger/ IE and probably won't want to use anything else.

I still think that he's better off buying the monitor locally on sale. I was out shopping yesterday, there are decent buys. Sony has these awesome LCD's coming out *drool*

Good choice on the board & processor- we have them here.

I'd take that bet, but I doubt you can afford to pay me the money.

None of the universities I attended ran linux as their primary OS.

Only one had linux on workstations available for student use, and that was only of 4 out of several hundred workstations.

Universities / colleges / businesses run enterprise level operating systems ... not linux.
