I own an MSI GT70 (specifically, the GT70-20C 008US) and recently upgraded the HDD to a SSD. After re-installing the OS via the recovery media provided by my manufacturer, I then began the grueling task of windows updates.

After the last set of Windows 8 updates, I install 8.1 and patch that as well.

Optimus was working fine right up to the last set of updates for 8.1 (which were just a couple of patches, nothing affecting my iGPU or dGPU) and now my computer refuses to default to the iGPU. For those not familiar with the series of laptop, the power button is white when running off of the iGPU, and turns orange when the dGPU is enabled.

I attempted to reinstall the nVidia drivers and Intel drivers with no luck. Any help guys?

i7 4700QM @ 2.4 Ghz
12GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz
Crucial M500 SSD 480GB + 750GB WD Black @7200RPM
nVidia GTX 770M 2GB

If you update drivers normally with an Optimus enabled laptop, you will lose it. The way you are supposed to update drivers (at least from when I had my first Optimus laptop) is to do it through Device Manager.

To be honest, I never really trusted Windows to do my updates for me. I get them directly from the manufacturer's website. On the website, it is "recommended" that you run the .exe to install drivers and not let Windows do it (regardless whether or not you already have the drivers on hand).

I'll give it a try once I'm home from work.

It probably would've been helpful if you had a list of what to do:

  • Launch the driver update executable
  • After it unpacks and the actual update program launches, quit
  • Open Device Manager
  • Go to [PC-Name]->Display Adapters->[Video Card]
  • Right click on it, select "Update driver software..."
  • Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
  • Point it to the path where the drivers were unpacked (it's usually C:\NVIDIA\[version])

Done and done. Optimus is working again after re-installing the iGPU. I guess the optimus settings got lost along the way last time. Thanks!
