Recently, I learned that it's possible to mix different sizes of RAM. I got a spare pc that I play around with. It was upgraded a few years ago from 512mb RAM to 1gb RAM. So now I'm thinking about finding those 2 old sticks of 256mb ram and adding to the 1gb that I have.

What problems will I face? The RAM is 184 pin DDR-1 400 and I know all of them have the same voltage and specs. I don't much about RAM but I think DDR is dual channel. I read that mixing RAM might disable the dual channel.

Looking at my mobo, the RAM lanes are set like this ==> [DIMM-A1][DIMM-A2] [DIMM-B1][DIMM-B2]

Thanks

If you want dual channeling, then both pairs of DIMM slots have to be paired up with similar memory. And both slots in a pair have to be populated, if you only populate 3 slots, you'll only get single channeling regardless of how the other two in a pair are populated.

Otherwise you can mix and match however you want.

So I can do it like this: [512][512] [256][256]?

That will give me dual channel of 1gb + dual channel of 512gb?
