I'm to the point now of being ready to rollback to Win 7. The only concern I have is if a Win 8 backup will restore my stuff in Win 7. There's things I really do like about 8 but so many little niggling things that I don't.
Anyone have got some wisdom on this one?

If you want to keep your program settings, back up at least the %APPDATA% folder for every user. Otherwise, you can't save anything else and backups won't work across versions.

Do a full image backup before you start so you can restore if needed for another attempt.

I assume Classic Shell just didn't tame it enough?

Here is a downgrade rights article but I suspect it won't be of much use to you.

I was sorta happy with Classic Shell in 8. But when I installed 8.1 things went down hill.
I use Fences to segregate my programs. With 8.1 I can't move the icons after an installation. They are on the desktop but you can't drag them anywhere.
You can move them around in Metro but not in Classic Shell under 8.1. Even the ones I already have in a Fence can't be moved around.
Along with all the other 'little niggling things', that was the last straw for me. I'll put up with the hassle of moving back to 7 and hope for a better experience in Win9. But if M$ tries to continue down this same road I may have to bail to Linux.
Windows has been a fun ride all the way from Windows 1 to now. A few hiccups along the way, but still fun. Till now.

Did you try updating Classic Shell yet?
Version 4.0 was released when Win8.1 came out. Among other things, it offers "improved compatibility w/ Win8.1."
(IIRC, they're up to 4.0.2 now.)

Easy enough to try that, before wiping the OS. ;)

Thanks cup, but I've had enough. I'm going back to 7. Nobody can say I didn't give it a chance. I wasn't impressed to start with and I remained unimpressed.
Yeah, there were some things I liked. But there were also things I didn't. Like I said before, little niggling things. Trivial to most but enough for me to say that I'm done.
