My sister has an old mac book she needs to replace. She is a college student that wants windows 8 (not a fan) so she can get microsoft office for $20 and other software and write papers. Her Specs are:

  • $500

  • 11-13 inches

  • windows 8

  • no touchscreen (I dont understand that)

Any ideas?

I'd probably get something from ASUS. I do have a thing for Dell but not everyone else does. Lenovo and Toshiba often get thrown out there too.

Basically at this point is just get the best laptop you can for the money.

The only thing I do not like about this is the RAM is maxed at 4Gb/soldered onboard. I really like 8Gb for Win7 and above. But for $500 there is little choice.

4GB for things like document editing and web browsing is plenty.

We consume content on devices that have 1GB of RAM just fine :D

Acer, Dell and ASUS are good brands of laptop devices.

Yeah i don't accept her reasoning though. Why would anyone fork over $20 for a word processor when they could get something like libreoffice for free. you can save as docx files. She extended the budget to $800.

It's her money. You can make your arguments to her, but unless she is actually in to computing she probably just wants whatever is current and common. Are you looking for new recommendations or...?
