So, I'll try to keep this short. :-)

Due to life troubles and a recent-ish divorce, I've been poor for a long time. My current ("gaming") rig has been an Athlon 64 5200+ in an ASUS M2A-MVP motherboard and a Radeon HD 2600 for years now. Without really thinking things through I convinced my girlfriend to get me a shiny new Radeon 7790 for my birthday, but I've hit a snag: the new card doesn't work with my ancient motherboard. (I thought it was a bad card (computer won't POST), returned the first one, and the replacement has the same problem, so I'm thinking my ancient MoBo can't handle a PCI 3 card.) So, I think it might be time for a major overhaul.

My PSU is a brand new Thermaltake TR2 700W. And hard drives and DVD drive will transfer.

Things that I must replace are motherboard, processor, and RAM.

Things that I would like to replace if there's an awesome combo deal out there: HDD upgrade to SSD would be great, new case would be good.

I primarily use my machine for gaming and web surfing. I'm not particularly partial to AMD or Intel. My ideal budget would be $150, but I'd consider it a miracle if I could replace MoBo, CPU and RAM for that. If I have to come up with another $100 on top of that, I should be able to. Obviously I'm not looking to be on the cutting edge of hardware here; I've been on ancient stuff so long anything will be an improvement. I'd like to play Skyrim and BioShock Infinite with decent quality.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

An SSD would pretty much eat your budget, so that's thrown out the window. :P

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Celeron G1610 2.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: MSI B75MA-E33 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($44.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $154.97
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

I would offer you an AMD option, but all that's within an affordable price range is APUs that offer no really good upgrade path. And yes, it's a Celeron, but it actually does perform pretty decently for what it is.

Wow, I'm impressed! You're right on budget and it looks like there's a nice upgrade path on that motherboard. Thanks very much!
