I performed a virus scan on my USB backup drive yesterday using Avast. The scan found a few files that were infected, so I opted to delete them instead of quarantining. Nothing important, so I figured this would be fine.

However, now when I try to access ANY file on that drive, I get messages saying the files don't exist or are in a different location. Family photos, word docs, mp3's, Flip videos; all unaccessable. But the drive is still showing the files and that the files are still using space.

Soooo...yeah. No clue as to what happened. Chose to remove 7 files and somehow rendered all the info, um, gone. Does anyone know if I can get these files back? At least the photos, videos and mp3's? Much thanks in advance.

Not sure what OS you are using or if the drive is fat32 or NTFS.

Have you tried checking the disk for errors or running chkdsk?

Depending on the os it may be a different.

Thanks, E. Sorry forgot the basics. Win 7 32-bit and the drive is FAT32. It is also running completely fine now. I'm still gonna run chkdsk just to make sure it isn't a drive issue. It's a WD MyBook 250 GB that's around 8 years old. I'm wondering if it just didn't like being on so long for the scan.

Well, when I went to look at the chkdsk it had closed and none of the files could be accessed again. I'm guessing it's the drive at this point. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Are you sure you have cleaned all viruses? Can you try it on another computer?

Have you tried to go here http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=902&lang=en and see if diagnostics of the drive can help?

If you can get that drive to fire up again so you can move your files....move them to another drive, a big thumb drive or your main drive.

Run the diagnostic program as EasyE suggested, I think you will find it may be failing if you don't have any virus running around on it.

Also if you're certain that you removed the virus and it's just a permissions thing it screwed up, log in as an administrator, go to a top-level folder's properties, and change the security settings. You can effectively reset the permissions for the entire folder and its subdirectories with a little elbow grease (let me know if you need help with this).

I ran the WD diagnostics on the drive and it passed all the tests. Then I ran chkdsk and after getting about half way through, the chkdsk just quit. Disappeared from the desktop, if you will. This was on my Win 7 32-bit system. I'm thinking the drive is just getting old and that I should just get another one. Thanks for all the help.
