I figure now is a good time to start considering upgrading my 5 year old computer. Looks like I am going to need to do a mobo, cpu, ram, and graphics card.
For the most part I have a good idea of what I may be looking at but would like some input on my idea.

For graphics I am thinking of doing an HD7950.
For Processors I believe I am going to go with an i5. I am thinking of maybe a i5 3550.
For the motherboard and ram I just need to know a good chipset and ram combo that works. I have seen z77 in the past but don't know if thats still a good choice or not.

We could recommend a list if you have a budget for us. Other than that, here are some general tips I can provide

  • Graphics is a good choice. If you could squeeze in $100 or so more, you could get a GTX 770 which performs really well for that price point.
  • Get a Core i5-4670 instead.
  • Which obviously needs a new motherboard, so a Z87 board within $100-$150 should suffice. Don't get anything more expensive unless you plan on using the motherboard's features
  • Still think 8GB of DDR3-1600 is sufficient, so no more than that.

I was looking to spend no more then about 700. But if the gtx770 is that much better for only 100 more I could consider going up.

I jus read reviews for th new gtx 760. Packs more punch then the hd7950 at a lower price. I may go that route.
