 Post subject: power supply tips

im thinking about changing power supply from 300 watts to a 500 watts, just asking is there anything i need to know when changing my power supply?

There's only three tips I can give. Find something that's 80PLUS certified. Consider a modular power supply (but if there's plenty of room in the case, I wouldn't worry about it). Get something from Seasonic, Corsair, or Antec.

If you want more research, there are sites that do full reveiws of psu. Tear downs and testing. I can think of:

just wondering, does it matter what brand my pc is because its a hp so will replacing the power supply work?

It should, I haven't heard HP using non-standard parts.

You might want to double check dimensions inside the case too to make sure it all fits.

would upgrading my power supply help my graphics card because it seems to be really laggy even on low settings?

No. You'd have other problems if you power supply wasn't enough.

one last question, does it matter what type of pci express when it comes to graphics card or are they all the same and will work?

No, not really. To put in perspective, a GTX 680 doesn't start getting hurting in performance noticeably until you plug it into something slower than PCI-Express 1.1 x8 / PCI-Express 2.0 x4 / PCI-Express 3.0 x2
