So I finally decided hook up my 23 inch moniter with a hdmi cord instead of dvi. I know I am behind the power curve. Well soon as I did I can't get the display to be full screen it is set to max resolution 1920 by 1080 the pic is just in mid with black boarder and yes i checked to make sure it wasn't the moniter. It worked fine with dvi so anybody know what problem is with hdmi? Or is it just normal?

Dumb question: are you sure the resolution is set and does the OS claim it's outputting 1080p?

Yes resolution is set. I am using vista 32 bit I am not sure if it puts out 1080p or not but all I know is it worked with dvi connected. I didn't think 1080p could cause resolution problem

the video card is what determines if a resolution is available or not, not the OS. that being said, I run vista as well, never had a problem with 1080 with any of the last three monitors. go back to dvi, hdmi adds nothing to a dvi signal but sound. fine for a tv, does not mean much for a monitor, where did you set the resolution and what video card are you running?

I am running ati 5770. I set resolution in display settings in the os. So hdmi does not make any better pic, video quality over dvi?

try setting it up with the video card software and not the OS.

Wow you do know your stuff it seems. You did help me find the problem in ati control panel with hdmi hooked up it will only let me go up to 1680×1050 but in dvi will let me go 1920 x 1080. Only difference with hdmi hooked up lets me pick different hd settings like 1080p and so on. So for games and video which be better option dvi with the higher resolution which my guess it be better or hdmi with lower resolution but more othion on hd?

I am not familiar with the amd video card software any more, have been using nvidia cards since my AMD 1950xtx. haven't kept up with AMDs software. just for your information, 1080p "is" 1920x1080, selecting it should give you a full screen.
