I have a bunch of hi8 tapes that I want to put on my pc and edit into movies. Currently, I'm using a PVR to record to DVD and probably edit the vob files somehow. Well, that's tedious.

So I want to know if this video capture card will help me out:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6815116021
Hauppauge ImpactVCB Video Capture Card

My camcorder has an S-video. I would just have to find some Linux program to capture the video. One reviewer already said it works with Ubuntu so that's comforting.

One thing that bothered me is that they say it works with all Pentium chips?? So it won't work with AMD? I have an Phenom II X6.

Thanks for the help. If there are alternatives, please let me know.

It's a lazy way of saying "x86 compatible".

I looked at it again and looks like it is S-video and RCA video only. I was hoping it had audio inputs also. Well, I'll have to look for something else but I can't find anything with those options.

it doesnt need them. you use your mobo or sound cards line input with that card.

if you want to go way,way overboard for what you need a hauppauge colossus will do video and sound itself. I have one and it has most every video and sound input you could want, but its pricey and I dunno bout linux support. but you already have something similar it seems?

Well, the colosus is beyond my budget but looking at ebay, I find these used analog to digital video convertors named Canopus. It takes s-video and has RCA stereo and transfers to the PC using Firewire. If I can snag one for under $75, I think it would be better. It seems to have a good resale value too since people use it once to transfer their hi8 tapes.

Part of me thinks you should spend the money for it for in case you ever desire high definition capturing, Black Magic sells capture cards that go from regular composite all the way up to 1080p HDMI. But they're like $150.

There's also that Dazzle recorder if you don't mind slight quality loss from S-Video to Composite.
