I updated my driver, now the stupid NVIDIA folder opens automatically every time I reboot. Why? I shouldn't be punished with this annoyance for the rest of my life. Any suggestions will be gratefully implemented.

Have you tried deleting it?

No! Though that's a perfectly reasonable suggestion. I always assumed my video card needed that folder for something. Does it serve no useful purpose?

It's a temporary folder the driver install unpacks to when installing.

Ha! That's so funny. Thank you, I learned something this day.
Odd that these programs don't clean up after themselves.
I've always figured that pretty much everything a computer does, it does because it was told to do so, by some programmer who wrote the code because he thought it was a good idea. If so, can you tell me why someone thought it would be a good idea for my NVIDIA folder to open every time I reboot?
thanks,
trailmeister :)

Interesting problem. I'm curious as to what your OS is?

I'm running Windows XP home edition.

That folder should not open at all. Have you run your Anti-virus and Malwarebytes to see if a gremlin snuck in and is causing this issue?

Nasty

I was protected by AVG Free anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall. I don't have Malwarebytes and would like to avoid paying $25 unless you think it's absolutely necessary. But because you mentioned Malwarebytes, I uninstalled AVG and ZoneAlarm, and I replaced them with Norton 360, which my brother had an extra license for. I ran a full scan. One hour and 360,116 items later, no malware was found, save for several tracking cookies.

Malwarebytes has a free version of their program, you just don't get automatic updates or malicious IP blocking.

From the Nvidia Forums:

Quote:
NVidia installer can't handle spaces in the install path which results in a registry key without quotes. When starting your OS, NVidia will start it's software and have problems finding the nwiz.exe. To solve this problem:

1. Open the Registry editor:

1.1 [Windows key] + [R]

1.2 type: regedit

1.3 [Enter]

2. Edit the key

2.1 In the registry editor find the key: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

2.2 Click on the folder "Run"

2.3 Double click the key: nwiz

2.4 The Value in the value editor looks like: C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nview\nwiz.exe /installquiet

2.5 See no quotes around the path as difference.

2.6 In the value editor add quotes like this: "C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\nview\nwiz.exe" /installquiet

2.7 Close the registry editor.

2.8 Have fun

Thank you, LatiosXT -- I now have a free copy of Malwarebytes. Running it turned up no gremlins, but I am grateful to have this software for next time.

FYI -- Deleting the NVIDIA folder does solve the problem. As does altering the folder's name. Good things for me to know.

nsvander (Team Member) -- you're positively brilliant.

Sorry for the delayed response.

Needless to say, your fix worked handily.

I thought I was the only person in the world with this problem and never would have checked the NVIDIA forums to see if anyone else was experiencing the same thing. I guess NVIDIA has a bug to fix before they release their next driver. I wonder why they've taken so long to address this annoying idiosyncrasy.

Thank you.

cheers,
trailmeister :)
