After I connect and try to get any update all I get is the message "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view." There is no error code. This is after three new Windows installations this weekend. Same message each time. I have Windows XP with the first two service packs on the disk. I got Internet Explorer 8 from a site away from Windows Update proper. I had to download some sort of patch first to get it. Other attempts to get stuff from indirect sources don't work. The stuff I have to put in first in order to get the main target just doesn't work for various reasons, sometimes in several layers. I have tried sfc /scannow. I didn't help.

More too it. On the first reinstall I ran Kill Disk first. Before I got on the internet I put in a copy of Avast that I downloaded into another computer first.

You need to install Service Pack 3 for Windows XP before you can update your system from Windows Update. You can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... x?id=10767 I hope this helps.

I did as you suggested. It told me I had to put in service pack 2 first. It is on the disk I used to install Windows

I still have the same problem. This time I was given the error code 0x80244019. Microsoft said to try the Malicious Software removal too kb/949104. There was no result. Further investigation led me to the same web pages that provided no relief from my problem earlier. Microsoft is unable to make direct statements about this problem.

I used the error code in a search engine. I went to Major Geeks and got Service Pack 3. I put it in. All is well. I just couldn't geet it from Microsoft in a direct way.
