Ok, so I had a SLI set up with 2 EVGA Geforce 8800GTs. A while ago my system crashed and wouldn't boot and I eventually traced it to the video card. I removed one card from the rig and everything worked fine. Then the same thing happened with the other. I'm pretty sure it's not a driver issue as even in the BIOS screen I got garbage all over my screen.

I thought they might be overheating because they always ran warm and only have single slot coolers so I took off the heat spreaders, blew the dust out with canned air and replaced the thermal paste with Arctic Silver. Too little too late I guess. They seem to run cooler but they don't work and I can't boot.

Is there any hope of fixing them or are they done for? I hate to just throw away two video cards I paid $250 apiece for back in the day.

You are most likely out of luck with those cards. The way to tell is:
1. try the video card(s) in another computer
2. borrow a known working card and put it in yours.
If, in the first instance, the computer acts like yours does now, the card(s) trash.
If, in the second instance, the computer works, then your card(s) trash.
You also need to upgrade your maintenance a bit. Waiting till something dies to clean out dust bunnies is a bit late.

If both cards work, but not individually, my first thing to point at is the motherboard.
