First time posting here, hope I have the right forum. I need some help. Long term I am planning on building a massive media server, however, I am in need of a short term solution. I am going on vacation for two weeks in July and I'd like to somehow access my music and video collection from my android phone and tablet. Is there a program/application that I can install on my computer for this purpose, without having to leave the computer on 24/7 while I am away in order to access my shows, movies, and music? Would greatly appreciate any help or insight in this matter.

Oh boy. The requirement that you don't want it on 24/7 means you need to enable other networking features, like power on Ethernet or wake on Ethernet. This is out of my league, so you'll have to Google that yourself. Or you can set up the computer to automatically shut down when you know you're not going to need it or turn on when you do.

As for server applications, I found PS3 Media Server to work wonderfully for YouTube HD quality streams. Otherwise it seems to stutter on higher quality videos, but this is a network issue.

You're also going to have to make sure you can access your computer from the internet.

I do have a mobile hotspot for internet access and I will also have my laptop with me. What I am mainly after, sorry if I did not really explain myself better before, is I'd like to be able to watch and pick from my video and music library from my laptop onto my Asus tablet in the car without it having to be out of its bag and turned on (its a 12 hour drive). What are my options for this?

You can't access a device that isn't on...

Have you looked at one of the wifi hard drives?

I know it's not a device that truly turns off, but it contains an internal battery, and it's fairly small.

For transcoding/streaming, PLEX is the bomb.

Thanks so much for all your help, looking at all my options I think a WiFi drive would probably be my best solution. I'm considering this one:
