I have a Dell Studio 15xx series laptop. Correct me if I am wrong but there is no docking station for these computers, so I have to go with a usb universal docking station.

My question is can I treat this universal docking station like a docking station made for a specific laptop. Mainly I want to have my laptop closed at all times (have it be essentially a tower) and run 1 external monitor keyboard and mouse off it? All I really need to know is if I can have my laptop closed and run my aftermarket monitor as the one and only monitor?

If so what is a good usb universal docking setup? Would prefer it to have an HDMI, that is if HDMI is still the superior video connection for monitors?

A cheaper setup would be to buy a powered USB hub and plug the monitor using the laptop's HDMI connector.

Also HDMI is pretty much the same video standard as DVI.

The only thing I want to accomplish out of the docking system is the fact that I can have the laptop closed and have the monitor as my primary and ONLY screen going.

Is this possible?

Like I said, HDMI cable and a powered USB hub. You can get both for like $30 if you know where to look.
