Maximum PC

looking for ram was going to get 4GB x 2 for a motherboard im going to buy but want some opinions for this. the mother board has 4 slots 2 ddr2 and 2 ddr3 my old pc uses ddr2 so im getting this MB to utilize the ram i have 2GB X 2 DDR2 i have been shoping for ram and found 1 8 GB
so is it better to have the only reson i ask is bc the one 8 is the cheapest i have found at 1333 mhz 32.50

Well if your old computer uses DDR2, you can swap them out for DDR3s, they are newer and also better. 1 RAM chip will do the same as 2 if they add up to the same (i.e 2 4GB DDR3 and 1 8GB DDR3). You can go for the 1 8GB DDR3 if and it should be fine. You could also go the traditional 2x4GB cards, but why not just 1?

Uh. Slots for DDR2 and DDR3 are physically different. You can't upgrade a DDR2 motherboard with DDR3 modules.

if its old enough that it uses ddr2, it will not be able to use an 8gig memory chip. probably cannot use a 4gig chip either, and as said above, you cannot use ddr3 in a ddr2 board.unless it's one like this, http://www.tomshardware.com/news/MSi-Eight-Memory-Slots,7214.html but this board came out in 2009. there were other transition boards made that had two slots for each type of memory. gigabyte, asus, and asrock made one.

the motherboard has ddr2 and ddr3 slots thats why the question came up. from my understanding the diff between ddr ,2, 3 is voltage thats why the slots are diff so you do not ruin a motherboard so why would it have ddr2 and ddr3 slots if they cannot be used together please pay attention to original post it even says 2 of each slot

If you read the product sheet on the page, you'll find that it says:

Meaning, you can't mix and match memory modules of different types.

Thank you I completely looked over that I had a motherboard picked out and I saw that one and thought that since I have ddr2 and I'm getting ddr3 I could come out with even more ram but I'm going to go back to the other motherboard that I had picked the CPU is amd 6100 fx am3+

A handy utility for checking what RAM you're using is CPUZ. The Memory tab will tell you what type of memory you have as well as the timings.
