I'm posting this for a friend of mine, so I don't have all the details.

She has an old PC with XP SP3. She had spent a couple of days copying / moving some files out to a Seagate 2TB USB drive. The drive is about a year old but she just started using it a few days ago.

It worked fine for a few days... then when she plugged it in to her computer one day, her machine couldn't see the drive, AND her PC "locked up" (not sure of the exact details here... take "locked up" with a grain of salt). She had a friend try the USB drive on a Win 7 machine with similar results. Apparently the Win 7 machine just slowed down quite a bit and reported that the drive needed to be formatted.

At this point what she'd really like is to just get some files off this USB drive. Any recommendations on any kind of tool that could be used to peek into the drive and recover any files that might still be readable? She doesn't have a lot of $$$ so hiring someone by the hour to do it probably isn't an option.

TIA - Dave

I might suggest booting a linux livecd and mounting the hard drive in there.

I was thinking of that but unfortunately she's smart but not a computer person, and I'm far enough away that I can't help out. I'm hoping for something similar but a little more user-friendly, e.g. a utility that you can boot to that lets you crawl thru the disk and harvest files that you want.

Furball's suggestion is the very best. Have her...

1. Download this Avira or Kaspersky rescue ISO.
2. Burn the ISO to a clean disc (or usb key via this tool).
3. Boot the machine off the disc or usb key. You can coach her how to enter her bios or boot sequence menu, based on her machine.
4. Once booted, the interface will show all the files on the drive whereby she can pull/copy off what she needs.

This is about a simple as it gets.

sadly there's no cookie cutter app or method here.

At least boot the live disk as it should be easy enough to say press F10 or F8 to get to the boot menu and then plug in the disk in. You should have a fair idea at that point how horrible of a condition the drive might be in.

I would recommend you to restore your data from the USB drive with this program: http://hetmanrecovery.com/
On the site there is video instructions, explaining the work with the program and step by step wizard makes the recovery process easy and affordable for anyone.
Good luck!
