Maximum PC

Lately when I try to play a game or watch a video (either DVD's or .flv files) my monitor will show a multicolored pattern like a carpet design, then the screen goes black and I get the “monitor going to sleep” message. Sometimes the soundtrack will go on for a little while but then stops too. If I reboot in safe mode videos run okay so I updated and reinstalled the drivers but it hasn't helped. Trying to run the Furmark burn in test has the same effect.

Can anyone offer any suggestions, or should I just go buy a new card?

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 (running at 44c according to furmark)

CPU: Intel i5-3570K LGA1155

MOBO: Asus P8Z77-V LK

MEM: Corsair CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 (16 Gigs)

PSU: PC Power & Cooling Silencer Mark II 950 Watts

Sounds like a bad driver uninstall/install or maybe a virus....it could also be the video card itself starting to fail...it could also be the psu failing. Unfortunately the only way you can find out if it is the video card or psu is to change them out with known good parts.

I don't know how many hours i have on it. Is there a way to find out? In any case, I went out and bought a MSI GTX 660Ti card. I'll install it tomorrow and see what happens.

Looks like replacing the card did the trick. My thanks to Nastyman and kleinkinstein for their help.
