In the August 04' issue on page 52 the (10 things to do to your brand-new PC) #4 says to install Windows XP Service Pack 2? is that a misprint as i can't find a SP 2 anywhere on Microsoft's website let alone windowsupdate.com?

Good question. I was under the impression that XP-SP2 was still in beta testing.

Probably a typo. SP2 isn't in final stages.

I think it's been delayed until August.

You can take a peak at it if you want though. :)

well sp2 was suppose to be out by now but MS once again moved it back. The editors probabbly figured by time you get the magazine it would have been out...

You can get a preview copy (Release Candidate 2) if you want right here...
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodte ... eview.mspx

but I'd just wait becuase the patch will be out next month... unless MS moves it back again!

Yeah, we figured it would be out by now. Unfortunately it's not. Until it finally ships (in August or beyond!) the official recommendation is to install SP1 and all the 5,000 security patches.

Now I remember why I haven't hooked up my new notebook into the Internet yet... no SP2.

The SP2 builds have been pretty stable, especially RC1 and RC2. I've been running them on desktops and laptops and have not had any problems.

The Security Center is pretty much worthless for me (I turn the features off) but may help others. About the only other new features worth it for me are updated wireless (still use my card's utes), popup blocker and new available settings for IE (mainly use another browser). Of course there are other fixes in there that have not broken any of my other software...something many people are afraid of.

Makes sense to run RC2 on a test box with your updated progs to make sure everything works before jumping in on day one of SP2 release. That would be a bad time to test blindly.

I think it's a good step though. THere are ALOT of people that dont know they should run an antivirus program or firewall. So even something basic like what's included with SP2 would be good.

i personally strongly suggest waiting till sp2 comes out (not beta) and then a week or two, to see what it is doing to other peoples installs

before finding out the hard way that it is breaking a ton of shite.

plus waiting a little bit saves you headaches if SP2_A comes out the next day if M$ says "oooops" the day after releasing SP2.

That's becuase most programmers do things the quick and dirty way not the proper safe and secure way. They (being microsoft windows team) have changed many things in sp2 so that it will prevent lots of those quick and dirty techniques from working. As a result a lot of programs will be broken but it's worth it in the long run to know the OS will be that much more secure.

Just a little FYI for those who don't have spare test systems and/or afraid of "breaking" their systems.

Try either of these virtual machines:

http://www.vmware.com/download/workstation.html

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

No need to wait to hear horror stories from the clueless.

Those who have procs that support NX can play with MS's DEP in SP2 RC2. Some P4s "support" it in software mode.

You'll also get to play with DirectX 9.0c...

MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 Release Candidate 2 (whoo, that was long!) has worked fine for me. AS ALWAYS, Microsoft had to make sure not to break the tradition and move back SP-2 a month. What a surprise. I'm ready to see Internet Explorer 7. After all, Mozilla Firefox 0.9.x is kicking it's butt. Then again, IE7 might not even be released 'til Windows Longhorn*, which is due, like, what, 2006?

*Codename for MS's next OS.
