Hey I have been playing all the latest games recently and well bought the entire DOOM collection and started playing the originals and man... something about old games that you just cant beat! But to the main point. I'm playing DOOM yes right now using STEAM web browser and I was thinking man I should buy all the older games like Quake, Hexen and so on. and then have them on a mini PC and I was thinking ok something small... Hmm oh The Raspberry Pi! And I searched it and its $35 for the 512MB! And I would order it
this second but... My BIG question is can I just buy a raspberry pi and then boom thats it? You know like just plug it into the TV via HDMI and start using it? I of course am gonna buy a enclosure and a USB Disc Drive but am curious just $35 for a entire PC??? Yeah its not fast but I am wondering if there is any extra things I have to have for it to work.

Also can I install Windows XP 32Bit on it??

Also what are some good games that would play on a Raspberry pi?

Thanks!

Well then...

  • You can't install Windows XP because Raspberry Pi uses an ARM chip. XP is x86 only.
  • Those old games technically work because they aren't even natively run, they're run through DOS Box. And yes, there's a Linux version of DOS Box.

However, Raspberry Pi was intended as a computer science teaching aid, not a gaming device. So I wouldn't expect anything beyond the Pentium requirement to work at a reasonable speed.

Yeah its just so I can bring it over to my freinds house easily so we can play some old games. My desktop has a i7 3930K and a 3GB GTX 580. So I am not planning on replacing it with a Raspberry Pi anytime soon! If I bought these would it work?

http://raspberrypi.rsdelivers.com/produ ... 17882.aspx Ignore this one. I thought it was $7 its actually $16. Just gonna use my extra 4GB SD and install Linux myself.

Then from what I understand it gets power via mini/micro USB. Could I just use a PS3 Controller Cable to power it?

No. PS3 controllers work over Bluetooth exclusively. They only use USB to either charge or sync with the host system. It's a bitch to get a PS3 Controller synced on anything that's not a PS3.

You can use the PS3 cable (it's just a mini USB) to power the Pi off your PC or a wall outlet. Is this what you're asking?

?!!?!!?!!??!?!?!

Yes I have a iPod adapter that is wall AC to USB and my friend has a Old PC sitting by his TV so I could use either to power it with USB. My question is if the PS3 charging cable is the right size and if it will work with it. It says 3.7V on the controller and the cable says 30V. While I believe the Pi uses 5V. So is the PS3 cable the right size and voltage?

PLEASE RESPOND SOON!!!!
I found two I am watching on ebay that are ending in about an hour.

One is 256MB and the other 512MB. Is there much difference between them?? Thanks!
