Not sure really where to take this one but:

I have a movie file (just a tiny little 5 minute clip) in .mkv format.

my 360 will not play this file when I go into the media player and play it through my lan. (shared file on my PC) "can't play this content because it may not be supported...etc"

but if I simply copy the file to USB and plug that into the 360 then it will play that file...
what the...???

Are you simply sharing the file via SMB on your PC, or are you streaming it via DLNA?

Allo;

on the 360: My Video Apps -> System Video Player -> PC -> media file == does not play
on the 360: My Video Apps -> System Video Player -> Portable Device -> media file == plays just fine

(the "Portable Device" is simply a USB stick)
so it's the same player on the 360, same file, but two different "locations". Should play them both it seems... no?

Depends on what the computer is doing. I can't access my music files on my desktop from my PS3 sometimes.

Computer was idle - not sleeping and not hibernating just idle
