Maximum PC

I'm going to be doing some research into some areas that will require me to go to new websites that I'm not familiar with. I'd like to do the surfing in a VM or a sandbox environment just to be on the safe side.

I read a tip suggesting Sandboxie. It seems to fit my bill, but I was wondering if anyone has tried it, or if there is another program you would suggest.

Either or would work. VMs have the advantage of pretty much being an OS that you can play around with. So if you're downloading suspect files off the internet, you can run them in the VM and see what happens.

Sandboxie also works as well if you don't want to go through the trouble of setting up a VM. You'll just have to remember to pick stuff out from what you downloaded, or redownload them in a non-sandboxed environment.

Of course, when I suggested a VM I didn't realize that it would require it's own separate OS to run. I have an old copy of XP I could throw on there (IF I can find it), but is there something else that might be easier to set up? A Linux OS perhaps?

I've never tried Linux so maybe this would "kill two birds with one stone."

I setup XP in Microsoft's Virtual Machine, inside of win 7 and it works great. It is a good idea to have 4 or more gigs of ram to do this. I had only 2 gigs in the box I tried this in and it runs but a bit slow. I have to buy 2 more gigs of ram at the up and coming computer show and it will make XP run at normal speed. XP was very easy to setup in Microsoft's virtual Machine. It was made to do this specific task.
