Maximum PC

Need some help buying an external hard drive. Need to be able to access it from both a Mac and a PC(windows 7) at the same time. Wanting it to be network attached. I was looking at the Seagate Goflex home 3TB drive but have read a lot of negative reviews in terms of problems accessing it from a Mac on the network. Anyone have any thoughts in this area. Looking to spend in the $100-$160 range.

I'm under the assumption that Mac OS X has an NTFS driver, at least for reads. If you need to write something, you may be hosed. NFS would be the best solution.

It's HFS, HFS+, and HFS Journaled, but you get the idea.


Sir, if you want a Mac and a Windows partition on the same drive, bootable or not, of course, Windows itself won't let you access your Mac partition. Or at least until you find software for Windows that will allow you to access a Mac partition. Windows has no support for HFS, but if you buy and install MacDrive, that's what I use for Mac file/folder access! Google "MacDrive" for me.

And of course, the opposite. If you run a Mac OS and your Windows NTFS partition does mount successfully in Finder, I learned that the partition and its files are accessible (most don't even require admin or elevated privileges!) but moving/changing/deleting these files are questionable.

NFS is best because it's agnostic to the OS accessing it.

I read about file systems but never heard anything about NFS, that's new to me.
