What do you do to keep Windows fresh, clean, and running smooth? Twice a week I do the following in this order:
Windows update
Clean IEs internet options(I only use IE for Windows updates BTW)
Clean Firefox internet options
Run Adaware
Run Spybot
Run Norton AV
Run Regscrub XP
Run Disk Cleanup
Run Diskeeper
Run Bootvis

I also update software as needed. I run XP Pro BTW. Maybe I'm a little to anal retentive? This routine only takes about 10min, and I do it on Wed and Sun. Any special routine yall do, or software you recommend? -Mac

I just defrag, that's it. Once in a while, if I want Windows to run fast, I'll use Linux :P

Windex and a rag or paper towel, whatever's closer. The trick is to scrub BOTH sides of the window.

As far as a serious answer, all the basics usual steps apply - defrag, spyware scanning, antivirus scanning, clean out cache and temp files. By far the best step you can take, however, is smart computing habits. In this age of rampant haphazard P2P use, unwise curiousity towards email attachments, naked systems (non-firewalled), and negligent surfing, there's only so much 3rd party programs and maintainence can do to repair preventable problems.

definitely (note that it is spelled correctly) not downloading much off the internet, p2p either. Run ad-aware and Spybot every once in a while and try to remove programs i don't use.

I found that by not using Kazaa (or even Kazaa lite) MUCH less spyware makes it's way to the computer. Actually the same goes for not using IE too.

Reinstalling the OS every other month or so. Actually, i have a new computer every other month, so either way works, lol. I like to use mine till i see something else i want to try, sell mine to next customer and then build new.

I do a defrag and run pagedefrag on startup. I am on about a 8-9 month cycle of re-installing win2k. It runs pretty good most of the time. Another thing that can help is to keep your profile clean, and just replace the thing every once and a while.
