something I would go for in the $350 range

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i3-2120 3.3GHz Dual-Core Processor ($109.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock H77M Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($25.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint M7E 320GB 2.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Rosewill Challenger-U3 ATX Mid Tower Case ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 350W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply ($35.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-222BB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer ($17.99 @ CompUSA)

Base Total: $359.93
Promo Discounts: -$20.00
Total: $339.93

Price drops on the memory, HDD and case so those are really good deals. Went w/ the H77 since its a good match for i3 (and non-K series i5 as well) at a good price point. Well hope it gives you some ideas.

Cheers

Hey, I put together a complete PC for you that comes with all the specs you want right on budget.

All the parts are from Canada Computers and you can see them online. (Some are currently on sale so the total build is $30 less right now than usual).
If you pick it up at a store there's no shipping charge of $10.

Use Linux (Ubuntu is popular) for your operating system, it's free and you can do what you need it to.

Motherboard - MSI B75MA-E33 $49.99 (59.99reg)
CPU - Intel Core i3-3220 Dual-Core $114.99 (124.99reg)
RAM - 4GB (2x2GB) Kingston HyperX Blu 1333MHz $24.99
HDD - HGST Deskstar 500GB $59.99 (64.99reg)
Optical Drive - ASUS DRW-24B1ST $16.99 (19.99reg)
Case - Cooler Master TC-102 Mid ATX HD Audio w/500W PSU $42.99

Sub-Total: $309.94
Tax: $40.29
Total: $350.23

Let me know what you think :)

Alright. This is what I ended up with:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 945 Quad Core Processor ($67.00) + no tax
Motherboard: BIOSTAR A75MG FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard ($55.99) - $20 rebate
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) ($24.99)
Storage:Western Digital WD Blue 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive ($49.99)
Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($39.99) - $10 rebate
Power Supply: Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX12V ($34.99) - $15 rebate

Total + tax: $324.22
If I can get all my rebates: $324.22 - 45 = $279.22

How'd I do? I'm not sure if everything will fit together.

Motherboard is incompatible. You need an AM3 or AM3+ board. You have a socket FM1 board.

If you have any plans on gaming though, you could buy an APU instead of the Phenom bearing in mind that there's no upgrade path on APU compatible boards.

Save $10, your hearing and recoup wasted energy by swapping that psu with this one. Those two 80mm fans will drive you batty. The Corsair is Bronze and single rail. Double score!

You're getting hosed on that 500GB hdd. Get 3x the space for $20 more @ $0.10/GB vs. $0.035/GB

Not sure if you have a "thing" for that case, but either one these slap that Rosewill.
Corsair 200R, $35
Corsair 300R, $45

It's sold out and it looks like a holiday sale.

It's all timing charades and games. Now, click over to Amazon for the $70 deal.

@Latios
Damn. Alright, thanks for letting me know. I'm going to try to return that but keep everything else.

@klein
I went with the Western Digital because the ratings are better. My friend suggested I stick with WD, too.
I saw those cases, but I stuck with Rosewill for the price and ratings.

Can you guys recommend me some decent affordable motherboards?

Thanks.

If you go to the pc parts picker website http://pcpartpicker.com, you pick your cpu and when you go to look at motherboards, it will list all compatible ones, or vice versa.
