Nobody wants AMD to fail. Intel will have a monopoly on x86, NVIDIA will have a monopoly on high-end GPUs and GPGPUs. AMD failing means either we get no progress and our wallets raped, or the EU and US will make Intel and NVIDIA do something that won't be good in the end.

Despite AMD sucking balls in areas, they're kind of necessary.

No nVidia monopoly anytime soon. AMD's GPU division will continue, whether AMD sells it to someone else, or they drop out of the CPU race & keep with the GPU's, it's the Radeon's that are holding AMD together right now. Radeon 7970 is the best video card on the market under $400 with a starting price at $390 (before instant and/or mail-in-rebates which I've seen bring them down to $360 for a decently overclocked card.) while beating the $450 GTX680 (reference design 7970 Vs reference design 680) in many games.

But definitely room for worry with all the people walking around the CPU side of AMD these days with their heads up their asses. Then again, maybe someone with their heads on straight will step-up to the plate, buyout the CPU division while it's dirt cheap, & turn things around...
