Maximum PC

I've read all the problems that can happen if the computer overheats, etc. My problem seems to be the contrary. I don't remember when it started happening (at least a year ago), but computer would hardware freeze at a random moment after turning it on (from a few seconds to like 30 seconds after turning it on), but after that, a reset and it would be good to go. This was happening in December-March, then it stopped happening. I thought maybe one of those Windows updates fixed the issue. But now again once the cold weather started (correlation=causation?) it started happening again a few weeks ago. My only guess is that it happens before the computer warms up, but I've never heard of this. I reset the RAM and hard drive connections in case they were lose or something, what else could it be?

Unless you're running vacuum tubes, cold temps usually do not affect electronics (otherwise those phase change coolers wouldn't work).

I guess if you really want to experiment, put a space heater near the computer.

Cold short? Where the temp gets so low that a broken wire, trace or contact shrinks far enough apart that a electrical connection fails to be made.

One thing I notice where I live is that the voltage at the wall outlets can vary as much as 10V from the summer months to the winter months.

Perhaps your power supply is a little flaky... when the PSU is cold And your house voltage is a bit lower?

Can you borrow a newer power supply and see if your PC reacts the same when it's cold?

Wouldn't this be a problem from the get go?

Have you looked in Event Viewer for errors? This is a good place to start all diagnostics when you run into issues with your PC.

Try changing out the data cord from the hard drive to the motherboard, some of the old sata cords back out of the drive and/or the motherboard sometimes even after you re-seat them. The new cords have a metal clip retainer on both ends and stopped those problems.

I would run a diagnostic on the hard drive using the hard drive's software from its website and also run memtest86+ on the ram.
