Hi! I am getting my friend new parts for his PC and I am looking at a GT 630 GDDR5 and on newegg it says minimum of 350W PSU but I know the card only draws about 50W and was curious if it would be OK to use a GT630 GDDR5 on a 300W PSU? His PC is a DELL Inspiron 530. Thanks! :)

His current setup
Intel Celeron 450 2.2GHZ
2GB DDR2
Intel GMA G33
300W PSU

You can probably use that card with that PSU. If you're really paranoid, get a measuring meter like a Kill-A-Watt.

Ahhh, Dell and their anemic psu's! All part of their master plan of instantaneous obsolescence.

So I went ahead and plugged it all in at http://extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine, assuming:
  • 2 sticks of DDR2 RAM
  • 4 USB devices
  • 2 120mm fans
  • 1 SATA hard drive
  • 90% load
  • 10% capacitor aging

Comes to about 195W minimum. It's a little under 70%, so it's within my comfort zone. However, no guarantees the power supply will be good for a few more years (although I've had in-case power supplies last way longer than what people said would)

Also "instantaneous obsolescence", what do you expect from a cheap $500 machine from an OEM?

You might want to double-check the RAM specs so they match up. You might end up slowing him down or worse using mis-matched RAM

It's not instantaneous. Rather, it's more like timed obsolescence

Hey guys! I just ordered his parts! Need a little help though... His PC is a DELL Inspiron 530 and He doesn't have any of the OS or Driver CD's. Could you show me where I can get the Drivers for his PC and I have a windows 7 64Bit (and 32Bit) upgrade disc and was curious if I could possibly use one of those and where I would find his key code on the PC? It had Vista on it originally but it was upgraded to Windows 7 and he has nothing but the PC. No manuals,OS discs, Drivers,Boxes, NOTHING!! Also if the DDR2 that is in it is a different brand like DELL would it be better to leave the current RAM in it than putting a 2GB stick of Kingston DDR2 in it? Thanks! BTW where would I find a Bios update for a Inspiron 530?

Or did you mean if the Speed of the RAM is different? Or does the brand matching still matter? Thanks!

The specs should match. As for different manufacturer, I don't know about that but its safer to use the same brand because each company might make things differently. You might get an unstable rig if you mix and match.

Alright Thanks! I just need to wait for the parts to arrive (should be Monday) then I will install his new CPU and Video card. If his RAM is totally different them I will leave it how it is and 2GB of DDR2 like he currently has will run almost any game so he should be set to start gaming!! BTW off topic question how do I set up LAN?? Is it a internet cable that plugs the two PC's together directly or does it just go through the wall Ethernet port? Thanks! :)
