Maximum PC

I am having serious problems with my computer. I shut it down at the end of the night a couple of days ago and have not been able to get it back on. It started with the monitor not turning registering any video signal, but the system seemed to turn on. Then it displayed the message that it wasn't connected to anything. I assumed that it was a problem with the video, so I opened up my system to make sure everything was seated properly. Naturally, I unplugged the computer for safety. When I plugged it back in, nothing on the display end changed, but there was a change in the tower. It started, died within a few seconds, then came back on on its own. This has happened several times now. I am in the process of getting another video card to test it with, but I'm not convinced that is the problem, or the problem, anymore. Does anybody have any ideas or have seen this problem before?

Is the computer beeping at you in some way?

Just from the information that you have provided, it sounds as though the problem could be either the motherboard or the PSU as the issue with the computer powering down and turning back on spontaneously sounds like a problem with the "power good" signal between the two. Do you have a spare PSU that you can use to help rule this out? Also, a few specs concerning your machine would be helpful.

If you have a CMOS reset button try pressing that. If you don't have a button you need to find your CMOS reset Jumper (usually JP5) on your Mobo and reset your CMOS using that. I had a PC that I needed to clear my CMOS every time I unplugged my computer or it would just hang on start-up.

No, the motherboard is not giving me any error codes. I removed the memory to check for a problem in that system, but everything seems to be okay.
I haven't been able to find a specific CMOS reset button, will popping the battery out work?

If you can't find the JP5 Jumper to reset then you can take the battery out for about 5 mins and then put it back in.

And there we go. Took out the CMOS battery, waited ten minutes, put in a new and good to go. Thanks Ness.

Buy a new battery, that one sounds like it can't supply enough voltage to the cmos to retain good running settings. You can get them almost anywhere, it is a CR2032 coin cell.
