I am trying to repair a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop for a co-worker. He told me when he gave this laptop to me that he thought it had a virus. However, I believe the problem is one of hardware as when I power this thing on, it brings up the Dell logo screen and stays there. I think the problem is the motherboard as the battery does not appear to charge at all as well. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It could be waiting for a boot password.

If that is the case, then why can't I get into the BIOS when I push F2 like it prompts me to at that screen (it also gives me the option to press F12 to get into the boot order screen, but doesn't do anything when I push F12, either)?

Download the rescue iso, burn it and boot from the CD. Once inside, update the BIOS and then run your AV scanner of choice, then be sure to power off normally so the OS resets itself. It should self-boot from here forward.

Never mind. After examining the laptop, I found that it is missing the memory chip. Because it only holds a single 256 MB SODIMM of PC2700 memory, it is not worth fixing. Thanks for the suggestions, anyway.
