Hi All,

looking for some troubleshooting tips here...

I have the following system:

MBD: GA-X48-UD5, Bios ver F8C
CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600
RAM: 2x2GB OCZ PC2 8500 @ 1066

I have two OCZ USB 2.0 (Rally 2) keys, 1x8gb and 1x16gb.

The 16gb is currently a bootable key with MobScene21's multiboot ver 4.1 installed on it, with a couple of extra tools i added.

So far - every pc i've plugged it into works fine.

except this one.

When I plug it in, the POST stops at memory testing and displays "Memory Test" or "Memory Testi" and gets no further.
I've left it sit for an hour and it doesn't go any further.

If I plug in the 8gb key, no problems. (it's not bootable - just file storage)

Any thoughts on wth is going on here?

I want to run MemTest and SpinRite on this machine, but can't (i know i can burn the iso to disc... but am being stubborn and also don't have a CD/DVD drive on that machine at the moment.)

If it's just that thumb stick, then it's the thumb stick's problem. Heck, just back up the contents, erase the thumb stick, and see if the problem persists.

Yes. Just because it works on one computer doesn't mean it works on another.

I'll give that a whirl and see what happens.

Thanks!

You do realize that you have an old mobo and those drivers could be quirky, right? I've seen usb drives halt a POST oodles of times in boards...especially those long in tooth.

I'm just trying to see if the USB having a bootloader or something could be mucking up the POST process. I've had instances of my phone making the POST halt for a few minutes at the memory enumeration. And I could unplug it and watch it immediately continue. And this is a Z68 board.

Worst comes to worse, OP wouldn't be able to use that bootloader even after say a BIOS update.

Ok, so I formatted the usb key FAT32 and booted the computer with it attached.
I also have a 32GB USB 3.0 key that I tried and it booted as well.

As soon as I installed Grub4DOS on it... it hangs at the same point during post (at the memory testing portion).

I have also tried inserting it AFTER it passes the memory test and it hangs at whatever point I insert it at.

It DOES work once windows has booted...

Any suggestions?

@kleinkinstein

Yea I do realize it's aging...
but the key has been a reliable tool so far and I want to check on the health of the system with other tools.

@LatiosXT
the bios thats installed is the latest (albeit still labeled 'beta' bios by Gigabyte.)
I might see if I can re-flash the same version and see what happens, or downgrade to the previous 'full' bios.

This is something you should ask where you got Grub4DOS.

I'll see what I can dig up about that.

Thanks!

I tried 3 usb keys, 8gb, 16gb and 32gb all installed with the same Grub4Dos and the same results.
Halting at the post of memory testing.

I formatted the 8gb key Fat32 and it posted and booted. It didn't work with windows format, had to use the HP USB Disk format utility.

I re-flashed to F8C and the same result, then tried F7 and it's working now....

It appears that it was the bios itself. Seeing as it's a 'beta' bios - and has been since 2009 and unlikely to be updated, I'll stick with F7 for now.
