Maximum PC

I'm receiving a GTX480 from Amazon (picked it up for $210.00),and I'm using a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 original(non-Quad).

Will the PC P&C PCI-E 6-to-8-pin power adapter I'm using on my current 4870X2 work on the new GTX480?

(I don't want to have to buy a new PC Power &Cooling Silencer just to make my new GTX480 work.)

Some research indicates that the maximum amperage rating for the wires is about 8A-12A depending on the type of terminal (not the 6-pin/8-pin thing). Or a maximum of 192W-288W for the six pin connector, 288W-432W for the 8-pin.

A quick bit of power consumption difference on Anandtech (idle vs. Furmark) shows there's a 231W difference... Assuming this is the entirely the GPU and the GPU thinks it has an 8-pin instead of 6-pin (there are sense lines to tell the GPU how much power is available to it), you might be kind of pushing it with the 6-to-8, but it's well below the maximum amperage.

Actually never mind. You are pushing it as it'll only take 75W from the 6-pin and dump the rest onto the other guy, which is 150W+.

I didn't want to get my GTX480 installed,and then not have it turn on because it wasn't getting enough power from the PCI-E connectors.

So excited to fire up my new card.

Still can't believe the price I paid,considering that the GTX480 sold for $500 new in 2010.

Just be careful.

Correction: the PCIe slot will only feed 75W to any card, and that's when the 6 or 8 pin PCIe cables come into play which can pull as much as you need. It's assumed that for every 6-pin PCIe power connection supplied that 150W will be able to be drawn from it. So if a card is seen with over 75W pull at max, it'll have a 6-pin and over 150W it'll have two; just to be safe. It's all about the rails and distribution really. The Antec 500W Earthwatts I run out here in the garage, for example, has two 6-pin PCIe power cords on one string. The rail it's on is handling the load, not the wire size, and can handle any power needs that a pair of 6-pin connectors will face. At any rate, 6 wires will handle a LOT more than 75W; the golden fingers in the PCIe slot will not.

The size (gauge) of the wires are relatively huge and really don't come into play when talking of Power drawn (watts) from the card it self. Your 1500W microwave pulls off a pair of wires of pretty much the same gauge compared to the SIX or TWELVE going into the graphics card. Gauge is usually only increased when talking about amperage. Watts simply aren't exerted on the wiring.

There's a few things with this part of the post though. The most amperage that 1500W microwave is going to pull is 12.5A @ 120V. If you're having one one PCI-E plug pull at least 150W, at 12V, this is 12.5A. Also, since the microwave wire is only running AC electricity, it puts a lot less resistance than DC electricity, which a PCI-E plug carries.

Either way, the specs I pulled out were for the terminals, not the wires.
