Download speed was 12mps until suddenly went to less than 1mbs.

Problem computer is connected by Ethernet cable with two other computers in a LAN, which are both still getting a normal 12mbs.

So far, I’ve applied the following fixes to no avail:
1) Ran a multitude of antivirus software multiple times in both Normal and Safe mode.
2) Reset modem/router and switcher multiple times.
3) Connected problem computer Ethernet cable directly to modem/router.
4) Swapped Ethernet cables with other “normal” computers on the LAN.
5) Uninstalled/reinstalled and updated both Realtek and Intel drivers.
6) Swapped input from Intel to Realtek and back. Drivers up to date.
7) AT&T ISP tech no help.
8) All other indications appear normal [device manager, diagnostics, etc.]

Can anyone suggest a fix I might have overlooked or is it time for a clean install of Win7?

ASUS LGA 1155 P8P67 Deluxe, Intel CORE I7 2600K, CORSAIR 750W PSU, G.SKIL RIPJAWS X SERIES 4GBx2 DDR3 1600, WIN HOME PREM 7x64

Hmmm, some questions to diagnose...
1. How are you testing your speed, Speedtest.net?
2. What download speed is your AT&T providing...are you paying for?
3. What is the make and model of your modem?
4. Are you certain that "the slow PC" isn't picking up a wireless signal from your router?

Hi kleinkinstein,

1) Several sites. Speakeasy.net, Speedtest.net + others.
2) AT&T. 12mbs. Initially, all three computers received 12 mbs until one suddenly went to .5mbs.
3) Pace Americas Model 3801 HGV [AT&T U-Verse]
4) Not sure if I have Wi-Fi chipsets. ASUS P8P67 Deluxe has 2 LAN chipsets; Intel 82579 and Realtech 8111E. All 3 computers are wired connections.

Thoughts?

First thing I would do is look in the Event Viewer system and application logs. This is always a good place to start as the logs will show grave errors in red. Double click on the error to get more info. There usually is a hyperlink to click to get a fix...sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't have an answer.

When you used anti-virus solutions, did you use Smitfraudfix and Combofix in Safe Mode with Networking, if not do it.

It may be the nic that has gone bad, if it is a pci or pci-e card switch it out with one that you know works from one of you computers that has one. If it is onboard, go into the bios and shut it off and then uninstall the driver, install a pci card, install the driver then try it.

Thanks Nasty,

1) Not familiar with Event Viewer. Pls help.
2) Ran Smitfraudfix and Combofix in Safe Mode only, not with networking. Will try.
3) Both Intel & Realtek network are onboard. Seems unlikely both would be faulty but will try uninstalling both and install a PCI-E NIC.

Don't forget to uninstall the drivers for the nics too, before installing the new card. I would also shut them off in the bios.

Smitfraudfix and Combofix will update themselves if you use Safe Mode with Networking, then ask you to run.

1) Uninstalled both onboard NIC's and disabled in BIOS.
2) Installed new Intel Gigabit NIC in PCI-E slot

No Help. Speed test still spikes at 11.5mbs, then dies back to .05mps.

Any suggestions for a "next step"? As a last resort, would a clean install of Win7 help?

Thanks

Stop the presses!

At the advice of another thread, moved wireless AT&T modem/router to a higher physical position in room.

Voila! Speed returned to normal.

Strange that the two other computers on LAN, one located next to slow computer, worked fine.

You didn't give out the information that you were using Wi-Fi and I assumed you were on a land line to each pc.

Ya gotta remember we aren't sitting in the room you are and you must give all information for a good diagnosis.

Point taken.

To be honest, now I'm not sure what kind of connection the modem/router is using.

The "Wi-Fi enabled" AT&T modem/router is connected to the internet by a coaxial cable. Also, all three computers are all wired connections which is why I considered all connections to be wired and the position of the modem/router to be irrelevant.

However, moving the AT&T modem/router to higher ground seemed to help so I assumed it was receiving a Wi-Fi signal of some sort from AT&T.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ok, if the modem is hard wired to the router and the router to the pcs...I think you still have a problem with the pc that was giving you problems. It could be the port you are using from the router to the pc that had the issues is bad, not plugged in all the way or a bad CAT5/6 cable from the router to the pc. ATT doesn't use wireless to run the modem. The cable you plugged into the modem supplies the connection to the net. Move the wire from the router to the modem around a bit, if you loose connection to the net you know you still have a mechanical problem with the wire or router. Try a different port in the router if the issue persists.

You can call ATT and ask them to ping your modem when you loose connection again, they should be able to tell you if it is your router that is giving you fits.

Thanks Nasty,

I've already swapped ports at the modem/router many times, and at the site with two PC's, one without problems and the one which runs slow.
Also, tried connecting problem PC directly to modem.

For some reason, when I elevated the height of the ATT&T modem/router away from the power strip, the problem PC did much better on various speed tests.
Could be an electrical disturbance from the power strip is part of the problem.

Anyway, I'll give AT&T a call [again] and see what they say.

Thanks again for your help.

Are you sure you aren't being throttled by your provider?

Grandpa,

All his other pcs work great, so the issue is just with the one pc.

wflint,

Have you tried to do a "Repair Installation" on the pc with the issue?

Repair install sounds like a good next step.

I'll pass along the results.

Thanks Nasty

Nasty,

Repair install no help. Connection still spikes at 11.5mps, then dies back to .5mps.

Do you think a clean install is a possible fix?

As I don't think I'll transfer files and settings, don't look forward to the hassle but will do if it might fix problem.

Thoughts?

I would try a "repair connection" first before you do a clean install.

Click on the network icon in the system tray.

Choose "network and sharing"

Click on "local area connection"

A small window will open, choose "Diagnose" and see what the pop-up tells you when it is done.

Remember to back up all important data before formatting and reinstalling windows.

If you do install windows, use the delete partition and create a new partition and format/install. This way you know nothing is left on the partition that may have been malware and it is indeed a clean install.

This was one of the first remedies I tried...results always the same: "Troubleshooter couldn't identify the problem"

I've done lots of reinstalls of various OS's, always delete/create the partition, and usually without saving "files and settings" to avoid saving a corrupt file.

Before I do that I'll give the AT&T tech another try.

Thanks.

Your other computers run at speed, so I don't think ATT can help.

After spending several weeks attempting to diagnose this problem, and being moments away from a clean install of my OS, I thought I would give AT&T Tech another last ditch shot at a solution.

Moments into our conversation wherein I restated the steps taken to resolve my problem, the tech asked if I had reset my browser lately.
Having never reset my browser [IE9] I replied "No".

Simply by doing the following in IE9 restored my connection speed back to 11.35mps!

Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset Internet Explorer Settings…click Reset

Problem solved. :D

Thanks Nasty, and to everyone else who offered their help.
