I just started ME2, and have encountered the first puzzle.

I have tried matching the symbols in sequence, but
nothing is happening -- none of the curcuits are connecting.

What is the exact sequence for clicking on the symbols ?

not sure where you are or what mission you are on.

I'm at the beginning, the first puzzle is the wall safe.
There are 5 pairs of symbols, and the instruction is to click on the matching pairs, which I have
done, but apparently not in the correct sequence.
I can't see any way to figure out the proper sequence other than trial
and error, which is clearly not the way to go, since with 5 symbols, you have
120 permutations of the 5 symbols. Obviously I am missing something.

ok, there is no sequence, just click on the matching symbols, it is timed, so you have to do it quickly, later you can buy upgrades to slow down the timing on this and the other puzzle that you will encounter. there are only two of these puzzles and you will get used to them the more of them you do. there are only like 5 fixed variations of each.

I have gone through and clicked on matching symbols, all 5 pairs, several times, -- and nothing happens. None of the
circuits unlocks. It looks like a bug to me. I have not found any help online with this either.

that is odd, I have never had a problem with them, and have played me2 many many times. I would just skip it for now and see if the others you will encounter will work properly, nothing is necessary yet, money or information that you dont really need. well you can always use the money, but in total its not really very much.

Well, as I suspected: I was doing something wrong:
The symbols require a double-click to activate the circuit,
and often more than one try. Now I'm up against the time limits.
So the only bug appears to be the one between my ears  .

Well, I think I got the rocket launcher, at least my weapons list says I have it,
but it does not appear on the weapon/ammo selection interface (at bottom of screen)
when I try to equip it. Again, something obvious, no doubt, that I have missed.

you may have it. but you still have to "buy" it, you can only change weapons on the ship, the only place you can change everyones weapons, and just before each mission, after you choose your squad. you cannot upgrade until mordin joins the team. then you can purchase weapons and ship upgrades at the science terminal. the rocket launcher sucks, even the grenade launcher is better.

one bad thing, you can only get more heavy weapons ammo while on a mission, from the big ammo crates. you have the same amount of ammo when you leave as you came back with the mission before. the collector weapon is the best, you get it on a scouting mission to one of the colonies, dont miss it, its the only "energy" weapon in the game, and you will need it at the end of the mission.

Found the rocket launcher, have not used it yet. Found the collector energy weapon -- nice  .
Disappointed I couldn't seem to win Ash back over, but getting it on with Jack (Wow) was fun :P .
The action scenes are nice and intense  .

Have you found any similar games that are comparable to the ME series ? I did the Deus Ex series.

there is not much like this series, but you might like, bioshock, age of empires, civilization, farcry, or stalker. they all have multiple releases, civ is up to V now, bioshock has three, age has three, farcry two, stalker has three I think.

you can get ashley again in me3, but most people persue tally in me2, you can develope the relationship after the trial mission by visiting her in engineering, I do not know what happens with that if you messed with jack, that was one I avoided.

I did Bioshock (first in series, too creepy), Far Cry, Crysis, Stalker series, Fallout series.

Jack is a piece of work all right, and I'm fairly sure nothing good will come from getting involved with her
