Part of me is saying, you could save up more and get yourself something that'll last longer.

What type of games you plan on playing with the cards you listed?

I agree. To make your plan be worthwhile you must choose a products that are effective and long lasting because there are products now that is only an imitation so beware of that.

Minecraft, maybe bf3 or mw3, dirt 3 civ 5 and i might try (might) crysis 2. Not looking for top res and eye candy, just playable frames. 30-45 on low setting say. I remember reading here the 6790 could game crysis 2 at 1080p, and id be fine with 720p if the frames are good so i think any of these cards would do it. Opencl stuff should run fastest on the 7000 series, right? Gcn?

I would go for a 6850 they perform better than 550ti, 7770 and 6790 (and only a few $ higher than 6790s, well worth it). When building budget rigs in the $600~$700 range the 6850 always seems to be ending up in the build, would be perfect for your system.

cheers

ive seen many reviews in witch the 7770 is very close. i can find those for less then $130, so wouldnt that be a better fit?
