I didn't bother with SRT in my own persona build as I have a dedicated SSD. I'm building a system to serve as a... workstation, might be the best way to put it. Availability while on the job is paramount, hence Raid 1 using onboard Intel chipset (P8Z68-V Pro board) and 2 2TB Seagate 7200rpm drives I picked up today.

I'm wondering... I have a 64GB GSkill Falcon (not Falcon II; rated at 230/135MB/s) that's too small for an OS drive. Should I throw it in the mix?

I've seen complaints about RST but with earlier drivers? How is it (the tech) holding up these days? Also... what happens if the SSD craps out? Will the system still boot?

I don't have a lot of time to test the build so I was hoping someone w/ experience could help speed up the process. My 2 other options are a Vertex II 120GB for OS and keep everything on the array or forego SSD altogether and just install the OS on the mirror.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure Intel thought of this scenario and if it's just a cache drive, then nothing will happen. Your performance just slows down to what it should've been without the cache drive.

I would assume so as well, but I've seen more than one thread on the interwebs that have mentioned seeing drives show as undetected then it wouldn't boot.

Granted, they could have been doing something else wrong.

I guess the only way to know is to test. Shame I don't have more time to test thoroughly but I will see how it handles w/ SRT enabled then losing the SSD. I'm hoping the Raid 1 holds.

Edit: found my answer thanks to Anand:

if you disconnect your SSD cache or the SSD dies, your system will continue to function normally.
