I had a nasty virus that I managed to remove, but now my permissions are all screwed up. The hosts file had adware redirect links, and I couldn't delete the file or edit it. It was hidden and un-modifiable in windows. I used a linux rescue disk to delete and replace the file. The virus was called Alureon. It redirected google links, and prevented running the TDSSKiller application. It installed a bootsector virus, which Kaspersky's Rescue disk was able to detect and remove. I haven't looked at the logfile (partly because HijackThis is all but worthless now), but to reset your default permissions, you can use the following command (from a command prompt with administrator privileges):




If you haven't already, you might want to run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, SUPERAntiSpyware or other anti-malware programs.

(Also you should never use system restore to fix a malware problem. Most likely the malware will end up right back where it is because it can infect the system restore points.)

Awesome thanks. Yea I noticed hijackthis doesn't help much. It did however notify me of extra entry's in the hosts file which I managed to take care of from a linux bootdisk, since whatever the virus did, prevented me from deleted or even seeing the hosts file even with administrative permissions.

I ran it from an Administrative Account. Here is the log.
