I have Win XP SP3. Using 2 different wireless routers and 2 different wireless receivers (USB style) this PC has been unable to connect to the WAN. Its strange because it use to work fine but one day died on me. The PC see the SSID fine but cannot finish the connection. I know the router is configured correctly as my tablets and phones are connecting with no problem. On the PC I have it set for windows to automatically assign the IP address. I have even used the 3rd party software to attempt to make the connection with no luck. I believe its a software problem. I have even attempted to use one of those network powerline adapters with no luck. If the NIC card is bad would it effect a wireless connection through a USB port? I wouldn't think so. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scan for viruses and malware. These can really screw things up.

Its clean this PC is about as bare as can be because its only used for word docs, printing and occasional browsing. I scanned it with spybot, malware bytes, and Norton.

Could your drivers be outdated? Maybe the two competing routers somehow corrupted one driver or the other or screwed up your settings? Maybe using ethernet? I'd try those.

Routers don't screw up drivers... It's not possible.

The driver reinstall is a good idea, though.

I suppose you could also factory reset the router just in case.

Can you connect to the routers using an Ethernet cable?
Can you connect to wifi (Try Stabucks, they're everywhere) using the usb things, on another computer?
Can other computers connect to the router?

OK here is the deal. I tried connecting CAT5 directly to it and still could not get a connection. So I tried updating the drivers for the NIC which did nothing. So I decided to reinstall XP since I figured it had to be software related either corruption or malware of some kind that my scans weren't picking up. After I reinstalled the OS (barebones with no SP attached) and updated to SP2 and then SP3 (via exe install) I had my wireless connection working beautifully. I then visited the MS update page and did about 110 security updates. After which I had to restart. I then went back to the update page and there were about 8 more security updates along with some others. After I did those I lost my ability to get on the net after the restart. I did an XP restore to the previous reboot and was able to get back on the internet. So there is an update that seems to be screwing up my PC's ability to obtain an IP address. I will try adding each update individually and see which one it is tonight.

Well, at least we know the culprit.

I don't know what to do now, though.

first thing is never let windows update your hardware

second is if it works, don't fix it.
