I'm looking at upgrading my dad's laptop CPU, but I'm uncertain if a processor I have laying around will work. He's currently got a Intel Duo T2050 socket 478 in there. I can't find much(any) info on the motherboard in the laptop. It shows it's a 667 FSB. My question is can you put a Intel Duo 2 P9500 that's rated for 1066 FSB. The P9500 is got a higher rated FSB but the same socket type. Can anyone explain how the FSB's work in reference to replacing the original CPU. Or where I could find what the highest speed CPU I could replace it with.

Laptops aren't upgradeable normally. Unless you're absolutely certain the processor in your laptop isn't soldered on. Otherwise, check the chipset and see what processors it can take.

EDIT: Actually went ahead and found the compatibility. The chipset that the T2050 is supported on does not support the P9500.
