Hi all-
Im looking to upgrade my HTPC CPU to handle video transcoding to an XBox 360 Media Center Extender. I have an older ASUS mobo (AMD M3N78-EM) with an AMD X2 4000+, which is definitely not capable of doing so.

According to ASUS product page for my mobo (CPU Support List @ http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2Plus/M3N78EM/) it can also handle a handful of AM3 CPUs. Im looking for suggestions of one thats supported that is capable of transcoding. Furthermore, hoping to keep it under $100 if at all possible, but if not, willing to pay a bit more.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks!

What is the motherboard model number so we can be 100% sure what is compatible. Not all motherboards were able to support the newer CPUs also make sure you have the latest BIOS installed on the motherboard BEFORE getting a new CPU.

Updated the OP with more details and link to mobo product page. The supported CPU list shows a bunch of AM3's.

Thanks again for any feedback!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103871 This is the only CPU I can find in stock that works for your mobo under $100 the other option would be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103727 but it cost 125 and uses more power, which may or may not be an issue depending on your PSU.

That first link is OOS for me, though I was able to find this one in stock which appears to be the exact same, except a .1 Ghz boost: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103885

Also, I found this that appears to have near identical specs short of a .4Ghz lower clock as the 2nd link you posted, except its also 95W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819103995

I'm pretty positive my PSU can handle either, but I like the idea of a CPU that sips less power as it'll be on 24/7 so I'd like to stick with 95W if possible.

Are you pretty confident that all of these CPUs could handle the transcoding without issue? Pro/Con of going with one over the other?

Thanks again!
