My PC is about 10 years old. Power supply went out about 2 years ago. Pulled the front Power button off to test the leads with a screwdriver before I realized the power supply was bad and unfortunately lost it somewhere.

Just got around to changing the power supply. I know power supply is good. Brand new. Tested it with paper clip trick. Fan turns on etc.

I'm getting the red power LED on the motherboard when I flip the switch to ON on the new power supply so I'm assuming the motherboard isn't fried.

I switched the connector from the reset button to the pins on the motherboard for the power button. The manual for the board says the reset button is optional and I read online that the reset button can be used as the power button if necessary.

I have two hard drives and a CD drive and they worked fine before the power supply went out so I'm assuming they work too. I paperclipped the 20-pin and plugged the 4-pins into the drives and turned the switch on and they didn't do anything but when I turned the power off the main drive made a small beeping sound so it sounds like that is at least getting power.

When I reconnect the 20-pin to the motherboard and hit the Power (now reset) button though, nothing happens. No noise, no fans, no buzzing or beeping or anything.

I tried disconnecting the reset button and reconnecting the leads of the original power button and touching them together and nothing happened.

What else could it be? The CPU? Is is very likely that the CPU and the power supply would have gone at the same time?

THANKS.

Bad caps is my guess.

If you have any the board is dead.

There is a chance that your replacement power supply is too New for that old motherboard. Years ago, motherboards needed +12, +5 and +3 volts but also a feed of -5 volts.

Since newer motherboard no longer require the -5v power, it is not supplied by the current power supply designs.

Can you borrow an old power supply from someone and try the system again?

Or give us more information about the motherboard model number as well as the model of the replacement power supply so we can be of more help?

...also if this is a new power supply in an old OEM pc, like a Dell, you just cooked the motherboard. You didn't say if this is a home built or OEM. Always give the specs when you post a question like they tell you when you read the "Read this before you post" instructions.
