tl;dr version: As NAND flash lithography shrinks, error rates and latency increases. And the research says that by 2024 (in which 6.5nm is expected), there's no point in going further.

Here's hoping that memristor or some other memory replacement is commonplace by then. Although one thing I'm wondering, why not make 3.5" SSDs?

They do make 3.5" SSDs. I bought one that was manufactured by OCZ last May and it is still installed in my Windows 7 desktop and is performing admirably.

I have a feeling that memory will be different in 12 years, unlike the article that projected all that bullshit based on the same memory, without thinking about changes that will take place within the next 12 years. and saying that hard disks will catch up to the speed of nand is really dumb, how much faster have they gotten in the last 12 years, not very. and in 12 years will a hard disk still be a hard disk as we know it today? I have a 3 1/2" ssd from ocz as well.

You know, they said the same thing almost 20 years ago about the transistor sizes couldn't get below 1 micron... then they said a similar thing a little over 10 years ago with hitting below .18 micron would be impossible (with the current tech). And look at where we are now. Gotta take these articles with a grain of salt.

The biggest problems with shrinking is countering the electron tunneling and current leakage issues. But there are tons of smart people working on these issues and what tech they come up with by 2024 is anyone's guess. Carbon nano tubing could solve some of these issues or like you said, the memristor is an interesting piece of tech.

I'm banking on holographic storage would be out by then. And like the Seagate CEO Bill Watkins once said... At this point, massive storage only benefits those who watch porn... lol so so true.

Well in my case, I can actually reasonably fill 1.3TB

Most of that is my Steam games. I have a metric fsckton, and I don't like re-downloading them.

lol, I can reasonably fill 13 TB. (11TB on current rig, another 4 on spare pc)

I'm waiting till hard drives go back down in price later on in the year so I can build a completely dedicated server box for NAS functions with boat loads of storage. Damn HD videos eat so much space, specially in raw format. My god. So glad I don't have to deal with RED systems otherwise my equipment investment would be 10 folds higher.

Honestly... who would want their wedding vids shot in 4k res anyhow? lol

If said geek couple are willing to throw 6k on red rentals per day with other necessary tid bits... Actually now that I think about it, I kinda want to do a wedding shoot with an action movie feel with a car chase or two... lol
