Back in 2009 I built my first gaming computer. Now it is sick. Every time I go to turn it on it will power on for half a second then shut off. Sometimes it will boot only to randomly shut off after 15 mins. It DOES boot successfully with some tries. Everything else seems to work fine. OS loads and can use pc well before it just completely turns off. MSI NF750-G55 board, phenom II 3.2ghz quad, 6gb ram, 320gb hdd and a new corsair 600W gaming power supply. Here's a youtube vid of what happens: http://youtu.be/hoGoVvKxVYg

What happens when you use a long push on the power button? I know on a system I built, when the switch was starting to go it needed a long push. Otherwise, it would do what your system is doing.
Also check the power supply.
I'd be careful, because cycling power to the motherboard can damage stuff.

I brought it to my "testing center" I'll work on it tomorrow. Never thought it could be a switch, but it makes sense. I've got to finish my homework for school tomorrow, but would investing in a PSU tester help any?

I never had to... I just use an old mobo with a broken sound and network chip. It's cheaper :D
To test the power switch, wire up an LED and a battery to it. If the LED doesn't turn on reliably, check the connections. If the connections are good, you have a bad switch. That's how I double checked when my switch died.
A replacement switch is pretty much any normally-open switch.

I doubt it's your switch - more likely, you burnt up your video card. If you play games a lot you'll only get 2-3 years out of a card. Pull the card and attempt boot up without it. If it still won't boot - it's probably the PSU.

I highly doubt his video card is bad if he successfully boots after a few tries... Also, even if you run a gpu at full potential 24/7 for 2-3 years, you don't exactly "burn up" the chip. In most instances, your ram would fail first before the chip dies.

I've had similar issues on older pc's, usually as a result to the bios. I'd say do a hard reset of your bios by either pressing the bios reset button (if your mobo has one) or unplug your PC and remove the coin battery, then wait 2-5 mins before putting it back in.

Another issue could be a simple short, which could still include a bad power switch. Other shorts could be dust, metal shavings, loose open wire or even spilled beer (don't ask) on your logic board. I'd also check to see if your mobo stand offs are properly secured on, sometimes you could have a much larger head on those screws and potentially short out the mobo, but that shouldn't be the case since you do get successful boots.

Unless a psu tester supplies the same "load" as your pc when it starts it is a waste of money. Most of them don't and the ones that do you wouldn't want to pay for.

Take the motherboard out and set it on an insulated surface, install one stick of ram and all power plugs needed along with the start button header from your case, connect up the video on the motherboard to your monitor and see if you get a stable post.

In your video I can't see if you plugged in the 12 volt power for the cpu...did you?

I used to game pretty hard core on pc only (avg 12+ hours a day) and I burnt up a video card every 2 years like clockwork. Had two friends online who also confirmed the same - they both went through a card with regularity every 2 years.

I don't game nearly that much anymore and now split my time between pc and ps3 so it's no longer an issue. Maybe that shouldn't technically burn up a card but in my experience - it happens. It always boots erratically and shuts down/BSD's erratically when the card is/was near failure - at least, that was the case for me. *shrugs*

^^ MTF withstanding, you don't "burn up" a video card. It's not exactly a consumable item. Now I've had video cards die on me, but they are mostly random in nature and hard to associate it with how much stress I put on the cards. It's just like hard drives, sometimes they arrive DOA, die in 3 months or never die at all... That's why you spend money for the good quality parts with good warranties.

Trust me, I've abused the hell out of video cards over the years and the ones that tend to fail were the cheap/budget cards in the $100-200 range. 2 of them were actually memory corruption issues. I still have my 8800 gts still running just fine and I used that for 5 years straight for games. Although I did have one of my 570's die after 3 months of use, but its just a random failure. (And now, when I'm not gaming, the cards are folding so I'm getting almost 100% gpu usage 24/7 for the last 2-3 months)

You can't just make a generalized stipulation about video card usage with a population size of you and two of your online friends, then blame it you being a "hardcore gamer". Not exactly a proper case study or lab setting to define your variables and external stress factors.

Bjaz,

I actually did burn a Asus 4890 video card. There was a loud pop and then a lot of smoke poured out of my pc. It stunk up the whole house. I had to air it out and it was middle of last winter...burrrr!

I've had videocards die on me, but they never seemed to have a set lifetime.
My 7800GT lasted for a good while, about 4 years, before it went poof in a puff of smoke.
Before that, my old 5500FX lasted for two years, and then after I put it in a new system, it has withstood about 5 years of full-time use.
My GT520 has only been running for about a year, and shows no signs of dying.
I play games fairly often, and usually have my system rendering a 3d image I made all afternoon. My GPUs definitely undergo "Heavy Use", but no death pattern has emerged.
Nasty, how hot does it get in your case? You might be just getting heat death, which is an entirely different cause.

Dude... I have video chips that are older than you... I just can't take anyone serious about their experiences with video cards when they only have dealt with an fx 5500, 7800gt and a gt520 budget cards.

Alright, I took the BIOS battery out for 30 sec and put it back in. I also unhooked the reset switch leads on the motherboard as well as the power switch leads. My particular board (MSI NF750-G55) has a physical power button on the bottom right soldered onto the board itself. It booted up just fine now I'm leaving it on to see how it lasts over a period of 1 hour.

Heck, I have graphics chips older than me. I have an ancient ATI from '97, and one of the monochrome VGAs from the 80s. Both still work fine, and the ATI gets daily use. Don't ask why I use it, but I do.

I don't buy cheap cards. Usually in the 300+ range and I only use nvidia. Okay, they didn't "burn up" (as in caught on fire, smoked, whatever) - it was just a generalization regarding their 'timely' death. *shrugs* - I'll try to be more verbaciously specific next time. :p

And this makes more sense.

@Jbaz, these are the internets. Everyone is somewhat annoying here. If you can't stand that, then go play Call of Diablo: Medal of Skyrim 4 or whatever it is people who don't play minecraft do all day.
