Reported at techpowerup and HardOCP hardware websites:

Apparently all kepler rumors were viral marketing lies spread to fend
off AMD 7900 sales.

sources:
http://www.hardocp.com/news/2012/01/25/ ... ing_shills
http://www.techpowerup.com/159503/NVIDI ... Forum.html

reported on other websites as well.

Quote:
NVIDIA Engaged in PsyOps Against HD 7970: Chinese Forum
A lot has been said about NVIDIA's upcoming product with which it will
compete against AMD's Radeon HD 7900 series, except of course,
pictures, benchmarks, and so on. Chinese tech forum ChipHell accused
NVIDIA of deploying shills across forums to shape public opinion about
the already-launched HD 7900 series, towards waiting for NVIDIA's
competitive product, these include blind talk about imaginary
performance superiority, killer price, etc.

Chinese forums have recognized patterns in this spurt of anti-AMD and
pro-HD 7970 imaginary-competitor product posts and banned scores of
user accounts engaged in this activity. There's a very potent reason
why ChipHell's observations shouldn't be met with cynicism, or made
light of. In China, competing factions in the ever-ruling Communist
party have been known to use what is known as "the 50 cent army",
where for a pittance, scores of internet forum posters can be engaged
to perform coordinated PsyOps, to shape public opinion, and maintain
public support. It is only natural, then, that competing companies in
the extremely competitive Chinese domestic market resort to similar
tactics, including those distributing NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards,
or, as Chip Hell alleges, NVIDIA itself.

So far all the rumors are apparently lies.

Who's to say that AMD wasn't the one who paid the people to look like an nVidia conspiracy?

I'll just wait for the benchmarks. Marketing hype (of which there was a lot, and forums people may have picked up on that and amplified) means nothing.

If I was working as a marketing project manager at nvidia, I would still be pushing Kepler on the fast track for early release. Even then, the GK104's were due to be out by March/April time frame; shouldn't be too hard for such a large company to pump the mid range cards out by next month considering they should have had all of their marketing collateral done by December to allow for printing and packaging. They'll probably pay a larger amount for a faster lead time for delivery, but could be worth it to release kepler so soon. Nvidia did note a while back that they didn't plan to release kepler until they had sufficient first day supply to meet expected demand, but they could just very well push it out next month on paper and say "more are to follow".

The GK100's are a bit more suspect since the product development for the higher end chips tend to take a much longer engineering development time. It would be a miracle for nvidia to push out a 680 by next month considering they only got engineering samples for the GK100's in December. I'd still put a bet that we won't see the 680's no sooner than March/April; still I'd hope to see an early appearance of the geforce line of the GK104's before Quadro and Tesla variations, which are slated at summer time as they already got pre-orders for the Tesla 3000 series for the Jaguar super computer in Tennessee.

If I was looking for a high end $500+ card right now, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the 7970 or the 7950.

I have no doubts that Kepler will be a worthy product. With that said, I find this entire thing completely distasteful. Nvidia did the same thing when 5870 was released, convincing everyone that the GTX 480 would be 3 times faster than 5870. They actually hired a marketing firm called AEG that spread internet rumors such as this, it was uncovered by consumerist if anyone cares to google it. What happened was GTX 480 was released late (6 months later) and was 10% faster than the 5870.

I hope NV isn't doing this type of crap again. I like nvidia hardware, but I don't like unethical business practices -- if Kepler is so great just put up or shut up.....let the hardware do the speaking (IMO)

When the cards are released depends entirely on yields. If this story is true it would suggest that nvidia is struggling to meet schedules. Were next month a viable option they would announce it to discourage possible 7000 series early adopters.

AMD and Nvidia have been running neck and neck performance wise for the last couple of years. To be honest I was a bit skeptical when news leaked out that Kepler would be so "overly impressive". Every time I hear a tech company leak those types of stories, I am inevitably disappointed.

We'll find out either way in a couple of months.

^except with Intel, they have been pretty spot on with their claims for the last few years...

yeah, gotta take paper benchmarking with a hint of salt and 8 shots of tequila heh. 7970 is still definitely impressive as is. Besides, we should see a eng-spec 680 in MPC before it hits the markets.

I love the episode of topgear where they showcase the latest hot ticket cars that they have been making since the 1970's. hehe

Reminds me of that Iraqi PR dude who denied that US troops were in baghdad even when tanks were rolling up in the background.

Then there's those that think that the Germans are the best inventors in the world...if not innovators of existing inventions, on top of that.

After all, they invented sausage, schnitzel, unregulated driving speeds, and well...the car, too.
They innovated on knife technology, building a better clock with cuckoo birds, and all that jazz.

Now had they invented the graphics card, heh...you'd be talking quality GPUs on a higher level of power, my friend!

get your stereotypes correct... Germans are great engineers, but they are poor in imagination; making them horrible at inventing stuff. What they are good at is making minor improvements on existing stuff then market the hell out it being the best item ever and a complete "game changer". Case in point: Porsche

Germans are great at reinventing.

 Yes, lets just repeat the said comment above with another useless post that adds no more point to the joke... just so I can get in on the joke action.

You had said they were good at adding minor improvements. That is not reinventing.

^Any minor improvement on existing products and then marketed tends to go the route of being tagged as a "reinvention"... in marketing campaigns. Look for "game changer" or other key words. You probably didn't know that since you don't know marketing or Germans. It's not limited to Germans though.

Since we are on the topic of stereotypes that make no sense. Did you know that South American's came from penguins and sport automatic uzi's in the shape of an umbrella? LIKE WOAH

I hate marketing BS. When something is REALLY reinvented, I pay attention, like how Apple reinvented the MP3 player. I don't care when it's really more of the same.
I DO know Germans. I'm part German myself.
