I was thinking today and have a question for my fellow folders. Now we all support Maximum PC. We fold in there name and I am sure many of us have subscriptions to there magazine. So that leads me to the following question:

Do you feel that Maximum PC is doing a good job supporting their folding team? Or do you feel they could do more to support us?

Before I answer, I need to know what you mean by this.

We are team Maximum PC, number 11108. As members we do all the folding for the team. They have provided the forum, but aside from that do you feel that they do enough to support and promote there team? We have almost 12K members, but only about 450 active folders. We have fallen out of the top 5. What could Max PC do to help?

We as fans of the magazine started this team in THEIR honor. THEY did not start this team and ask its readers to join. They don't owe us anything, as that's not why we fold for them. This isn't a corporate team. If it was, you see us buying folders with prizes and stupid ass drawings. We are more than fortunate when they plug our efforts in the magazine once or twice a year.

If that doesn't answer your question, I don't know what will.

They could still support the team by half a page or a full page in the magazine every month.

I think there support has been mixed. At times it can be good, at others nothing. They included F@H on the CD's for some time, those are now discontinued. Occasional articles and mentions are nice and sometimes bring a nice influx of new folders.

As SM points out I guess this was a community initiative and not a company one so any support they provide is a bonus.

I for one just wish there was something along the lines of promotional items. The old shirt/lanyard thread pops up every once in a while but never matures. If there ever was such an item I would buy one now! I dont have the skills to make this happen but can only cheer on from the sidelines!

^^^ This got me started.

As far as putting feature articles or even a blurb in each magazine about it, I think it would be nice. But I recognize that everything that goes into a print mag has to be paid for somehow to cover more paper and ink. Every space on the page either has to have value to the core audience (articles) or it has to generate revenue (ads.)

As digital editions become more ubiquitous, it may not cost anymore to add a page to that edition to promote the team.

The way I would like to see Maximum PC support us is by doing 2 things.

1: When they test out new CPU's and video cards, as part of the benchmarks they run, show the PPD.

2: They usually have extra hardware in the test lab, offer some of that as a competition.

Thats a great idea, they could run some of that lab hardware! I mean really, just leaving a GTX 590 for a few hours would slay most of us.

I'd totally agree that adding folding to the benchmarks would be great. It would do multiple things such as:

1. Get a guage of PPD on an item (well, obvious)
2. If people don't know what folding is, maybe they'll wonder enough to find out.
3. It would definitely help us and others find some answers when we search for 'XXX PPD' on the internets (whatever hardware and PPD). some of that info is difficult to find, especially for cutting/bleeding edge hardware.
4. I'm sure that there are more good reasons to add folding as a benchmark...

They had SWAG for a while. It was discontinued due to a lack of interest.

That stuff goes back to the vendors when the mag is done with them.

Not trying to argue with you bros, but this has all been discussed to death in the past so I'm addressing what is know from previous attempts.

I know that most vender hardware goes back. But they did a contest last year where they gave away 5 computer cases, so either they get to keep some of it or they have to buy some of there own stuff.

I personally dont think that you are arguing with us on the point, you have been folding for a long time and are just speaking from past experience.

well 99% of the teams that fold have no support from anyone, so I say any support is better than none.

I still wear a maximum pc hat, and Hackman has one cause I gave it to him as a prize. if he still has it, is a question only he can answer.

Many years ago when Will Smith was the editor. They had hats, coolies for beer cans, and small little nerdy tool kits.

That reminds me, I have a signed copy of a PCGamer magazine with The Vede's signature on it. Now THAT was a long time ago. lol

when "number six" (or chamsalot) started this team he was an admin on the original mpc site. my thought is because of his association with mpc they offered to provide a place for the team to call their own. it was not a folding team started by mpc. the original site was on delphi, and is still there actually. he folded as the R&M Collective with a user number of 16327.

when I started could not have been much after him, as my user number is 16351. its up into the 600,000 range now. we had absolutly no mag support until after we moved to this site and will smith was in charge, then we got limited support, and really nothing since will left. what we have is a fairly large presence on a good site, and we create more traffic here than the mag does although we used to get more.

I think mentions in the mag have been great. I've actually been surprised to see it in print; and there was much rejoicing. Could they do more? Probably, but page real estate is critical with every issue and even a blurb could very well be a financial decision to place it or put it on the cutting floor.

What if a good writer submitted something to an editor and see what flies though? I mean, there's been enough $500 builds to choke a whale and maybe they'd like content ideas. Perhaps it's not up to MPC to focus on this sector of our efforts anymore than helping us Bitcoin or something, but rather up to us to do it for them. One update every year in a big issue (Dream Machine) would make me ecstatic, but not needed.

Or...the idea that if you see something enough times you research it on your own. Who is John Galt/Took an arrow to the knee/Leroy Jenkins effect in that if you don't know you'll look into it. So just "Fold for team 11108" in the page gutters could be huge. I just remember the hippo trivia in the gutter that got people's focus.
-------------------
Either way, F@H is huge and how people find it and want to partake in it is vast. I don't want to snub the mag here, but I didn't find it by reading the pages but rather the forums and friends in here already doing it. I'd also like more 11108 members, but as long as they're out there folding for someone; I'm all for it. Heck, I give big props to "Default" folders that are just doing it.
