I was pushing my monitor forward to attach an HDMI cable to install my new video card and didn't realize there was a cup of coffee sitting in front of it. Well.. the coffee spilled right into my open case that was lying on the floor. I'm going to get a hair dryer later today and try to dry it out, I sopped up what I could with paper towels. Does anyone have any other tips that might help me in this completely stupid situation that I should be drug outside and shot for? *sigh*

Just wipe it clean. I've spilled beer on my motherboard when it was on and it shorted out the system. I just cleaned it with a damn clean microfiber towel and had no issues with it since.

Cover all the components top and bottom with dry rice and let it sit there 24 hours, it will soak up any moisture there.

I am no pro at cleaning coffee spills, but a coffee with milk and sugar def won't help the situation.

Does anyone know if a sonic resonator resivoir with pure alcohol may help clean the coffee-covered components?
Good luck bro!

Well I cleaned the motherboard, the Coffee did indeed have powder creamer and sweet & low in it. Anyways, When I try to boot I don't get the 'beep' that accompanies it, and it doesn't actually boot.. the fans spin and it appears to be getting power but no signal to monitor. I tried two different video cards and two different monitors. I think I'm going to order a new motherboard later today .

This may take a bit more cleaning. I spilled coke and it got into the thing and on the motherboard of my Commodore 128. It was dry, but sticky and when I fired it up, all I had was garbage on the screen. Powered it back don and unplugged it. It took a lot of QTips and rubbing alcohol to clean that mess up, not to mention time. It takes very little to screw things up and the reason i was using a magnifying glass with a light around it to help with seeing what i was doing. When I got done it worked and is still working. The reason for using alcohol was that it evaporates quickly as welll as cleans good.

You can remove the small round battery or even better if we knew the model of your mother board then there might be a jumper to do it.

But the fact that you applied power so soon after the spill happened gives me doubts that it will work again.

Thanks, I reset the CMOS but it still doesn't boot. Time for a new MoBo I guess. Oh well things happen. I'll certainly be more careful and aware of what is around my computer from now on.

Got a replacement board and am now up and running. I had a bad RAM module too and took care of that by taking it out. Just wanted to say thanks for the advice and give you guys an update. Now for some SWTOR!

Yes, I will be much more careful from now on. Or at the very least make it beer next time because my computer certainly let me know it didn't like the coffee.

Oh, Btw, as a side note. When taking the CPU out of my old motherboard it was stuck rather firmly to the stock heatsink/fan and ended up popping out without even raising the lever and bending some pins.. I straightened them out and it works fine now but is there any easier way to remove a CPU from a motherboard?

Huh??? I'm wondering how that thing could pop out without unlatching the lever, because with the lever locked down, that CPU is locked into the socket. When you remove the cooler, the processor should stay put until you unlatch it. Incidently, the bad memory stick would keep it from booting and apparently did. Contact cleaner is good for cleaning that stuff, but rather dangerous in a closed environment.
