Update: My 4.5ghz OC was getting 15k PPD for about two WU's but I could not keep it up lol, was using refrigerated air ducted directly onto the CPU cooler. It currently gets 9600 PPD at 4.1ghz stable full time with 1.4volts, 200x20.5.

I'm inspired by you all. I will follow in your footsteps this fall when the weather cools down.

You could always get a better cooler and try again now...

I got my 4.5ghz on air: Cooler Master Hyper 212+ with 2 Scythe Ultra Kaze's (3000 RPM / 133 CFM) fans in Push/Pull.

Anyway, I'm out now. See you guys in the next Chimp Challenge or something.
I'll still check my PM's and such and maybe post occasionally.

Hey vistageek, You don't list your location in your user profile. With that overclock I am wondering, are you at a research station in Antarctica? I know, the unit is sitting in the shade just outside a window. The wind is 30 knots and the air temp is -40.
What kind of cooling are you using to get that overclock?
Of course those cores would be a lot hotter if you were running a Stanford SMP protein research folding ap. All cores would be running at 100%.

I didn't actually get my poor little Q6600 going that fast haha. One time I fired up Coretemp and that's what it showed, so I screenshotted it. I wish this thing would overclock like that :)

What kind of cooling should I use to prevent a power surge?

You might try this in the help me buy help me build section of the forum it would be a better fit.

Very well said. Check my usern to see my DRAM clocked to 11th cloud.

I have a custom dual motherboard rigged with two i7-980X ... megaclocked.

Wrong place dude. Out for trolling, or are you really curious?

Here: .865V. That's your answer. Beat it or beat it.

curious than anything since its hard to under clock than most people think since the chip needs a certain amount of power to have the logic gates working.

High k gates have helped out tremendously with regard to underclocking. Probably one of the most important innovations in x86 architecture. But to return to the speed conversation...

My i3 560 is @ 4.625Ghz. Anything faster than that and my RAM craps out. :(

Pushing almost 30fps in Unigine's Heaven DX11 benchmark. That's faster than my stock clocked i7-2600K was coupled with the same gear.

Not bad for a mini-itx rig. ;)

Overclocking is new to me as I have just now built my first rig with the real guts to do it.

AMD A8-3870k llano 3.0 Ghz OC'ed to 3.5 on Air (CM Hyper Tx3, Push Pull)
8 GB of Gskill Ripjaws X 1600 @ 1866

I also underclocked it, I guess because I was bored, any ways on stock voltage it would go down to 1.6, however undervolting the chip a bit got me to 1.2 then stopped. I'm to afraid to hurt it.

Nothing great here, but it's way more than I've ever pushed for in the past.
Antec 900 case with 200mm top fan as exhaust
Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev 1.0 motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1055t 2.8GHz 6-core processor
Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme HSF with 80CFM 120mm fan added & alligned to blow warm air directly into the 200mm top exhaust fan

Was never able to get over about 3.1 to 3.2 GHz in the past... but durring my rebuild adding in 2 SSDs in RAID-0 & 16GB DDR3-2133 RAM, I upgraded the BIOS from F5 beta to F7 final. After getting everything set, I decided to try my hand at overclocking again.

Here's a little screenshot of my results :D
Image

Been folding for over an hour, max temp 48C at 3.5GHz on air cooling! Not going to try any higher though. 700MHz OC is more than enough for me right now :!:
